Engineering Achievement Project Award

Darussalam Enterprise, DARe, received the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Project Award for the Pulau Muara Besar, PMB, Bridge Project during the 39th Conference of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations, CAFEO 39, held virtually on 3rd December, at the International Convention Centre, Berakas. The annual CAFEO this time around was hosted by Institution of Surveyors, Engineers and Architects, PUJA Brunei.

 

The award was presented by Engineer Haji Mohammad Zin bin Salleh, President of PUJA and Chair of CAFEO 39, and received by Javed Ahmad, Darussalam Enterprise’s Chief Executive Officer. This award is a recognition that the PMB Bridge Project is identified as one of the outstanding engineering achievements within ASEAN as it demonstrates outstanding engineering skills which has made a significant contribution to the engineering progress and the quality of life in the ASEAN region. Various innovative technology was incorporated into the design and construction of the bridge. The 2.68 kilometre PMB Bridge Project carrying utility services including power, water, and telecommunication was completed in May 2018.

Contribution of Antigen Rapid Test

Ten thousand units of Rapid COVID-19 Antigen Self-Test Kits have arrived in the country from Bangkok, Thailand, 3rd December.

 

The donations were received by Awang Haji Maswadi bin Haji Mohsin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health from Mr. Marc Porter, Acting Charge d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in the country. The presentation was held today at the Brunei International Airport Cargo Centre.

Roundtable Session: Wisdom Behind COVID-19

More than 150 people comprising school students, teachers, parents, guardians and the public, yesterday morning participated in the Roundtable Session: The Wisdom Behind COVID-19 in conjunction with World Children’s Day 2021 celebration held virtually and on the Brunei Youth Council’s YouTube channel.

 

Participating in the session was Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari, Member of the Legislative Council. The roundtable discussion aimed to produce ideas and share new views among children, parents, teachers and the public about the new normals that will be faced either at school, workplace and at home. The session also instils spirituality in every child, parent, teacher and the public in order to achieve self-stability with various positive activities. The session also emphasised on how to raise awareness on mental health care aspects and strengthen the bonds of relation between family, friends and teachers in forming better communication especially with the advent of technological and mass media innovations. The session was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports through the Department of Community Development, JAPEM in collaboration with the Brunei Youth Council.

Seeds for the Future Programme

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a catalyst for educational systems worldwide to ensure that the integration of emerging technologies is further accelerated and that online delivery becomes an integral component of education. In Brunei Darussalam, apart from ensuring schools are equipped to adopt the blended learning environment, the Ministry of Education is also actively preparing educators to be trained with the right digital and 21st century pedagogical competencies for them to be able to deliver these skills and knowledge post-COVID-19. The Minister of Education emphasized the matter during official opening ceremony of the Huawei Seeds For The Future Programme, Brunei 2021 via online yesterday morning.

 

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman said the programme is Huawei’s flagship global corporate social responsibility programme which was first launched in 2008. Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has shifted the mode of deliveries to online with the number of participants tripled. The minister added, in order to support this adoption, large-scale, cross-industry partnership and collaboration between diverse stakeholders around a common goal to provide cross cutting solutions for the future of digital education is vital. He added, the pandemic has taught that online learning, internet access and connectivity have now become a necessity.

 

Her Excellency Yu Hong, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam among others stated that during the past 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, cooperation in education between the two countries has developed consistently. The Chinese government has provided scholarships and training programs to Bruneian students and incumbents through various channels, and Chinese enterprises in Brunei have taken the initiative to cooperate with relevant universities in both countries to cultivate talents needed for Brunei’s industrial development through multiple channels.

 

42 students from different Higher Education Institutions including Universiti Teknologi Brunei; Universiti Brunei Darussalam; Politeknik Brunei; Institute of Brunei Technical Education and Micronet International College were selected to participate in the programme. Also participating was Datin Seri Paduka Dr. Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohammad Salleh, Deputy Minister of Education.

22 New Cases, 1 New Cluster Detected, 71 Cases Recovered

22 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the country, bringing the total COVID-19 cases to 15,164. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Minister of Health stated the matter at a media conference on the latest COVID-19 situation yesterday afternoon at Dewan Al’Afiah, Ministry of Health.

 

There are 13 additional new cases to 4 of the existing active clusters who are previously close contacts with several positive cases. Meanwhile, 1 new cluster was detected involving 2 cases. The new cluster is Nur Jamila construction staff house, which is a housing cluster that accommodates the company’s employees. Five clusters were closed following no new detected cases for 28 days, namely 13387, 13461, Pakiza staff house, 13379 and 13392. Therefore, current total active clusters stand at 118. 7 new cases are still being investigated to determine the source of infection.

 

71 cases have recovered, taking the total recovered cases to 14,718, with 346 cases remaining active. Among the cases, one is in Category 5 and is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit, requiring assistance of artificial ventilation, as well as an additional heart/lung machine, ECMO. Meanwhile, there is one case in Category 4, requiring oxygen assistance and is under close monitoring. 2,239 samples have been tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus which brings the total number of lab tests carried out since January 2020 to 633,714.

Hybrid Talk Show Programme

Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah binti His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah in a sabda highlighted the importance of having strong support systems in every aspect. At the same time, Her Royal Highness touched on being passionate and to persevere and be consistent to become a successful athlete. In the sabda during the ‘ASEAN We Score Campaign: Break Records, Make History’ hybrid talk show in conjunction with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which was broadcast from Jakarta and Japan on YouTube Live, Her Royal Highness emphasised the significant role of high-profile athletes in calling attention to appropriate social behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their inspiring roles have advocated to empower, educate and motivate not only to the athletes but also to every young people through the social media platforms have given the much-needed impetus despite the restrictions and challenges currently faced. In the sabda, Her Royal Highness sees her father, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah as a source of inspiration to be active in sports. Her Royal Highness as Brunei Darussalam’s Female Sports Ambassador was one of the panellists taking part in the programme which was also joined by other Female Sports Ambassadors from the ASEAN Member States.

 

Among the main topics discussed during the Talk Show included personal experiences of respective Female Sports Ambassador in building up their careers as athletes or sports professionals; sharing personal views on the state of women’s and girls’ participation in sports in regional and global sports arena; personal aspirations on the participation of women and girls in sports in ASEAN; as well as their perspective on how sports could be utilized as a means to promote gender equality through women empowerment and healthy lifestyle. The programme also coincided with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

 

The talk show also touched on issues such as gender equality and women’s leadership. The programme was part of the ASEAN-Japan Actions on Sports project funded by the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund, JAIF. The “ASEAN We Score Campaign: Break Records, Make History!” is being held throughout November and December, with a talk show held back-to-back with the Tribute to Tokyo 2020 ASEAN Olympic and Paralympic Medallists at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia, and held virtually in the ASEAN member states.

Meat without Halal Import Permit Seized

1.255 kilogrammes of Japanese Wagyu Meat believed to have been brought into the Country without a Halal Import Permit were seized in an operation on a house in Kampung Beribi, Gadong.

 

The operation was carried out by the Halal Food Control Division Enforcement officers from the Syariah Affairs Department, Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Royal Brunei Police Force as well as the Brunei Darussalam Food Authority, following complaints received from the public about cases of meat of which the halal status is in doubt being sold through social media. The case will be investigated under Section 8 and 9, Halal Meat Act, Chapter 183. If found guilty, can be sentenced up to 2 years imprisonment or fined up to $8,000 or both.

Capitalworks Emerging Markets Acquisition Corp Announces Closing of $230 Million Initial Public Offering, Including Full Exercise of the Underwriters’ Over-Allotment Option

NEW YORK, Dec. 03, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Capitalworks Emerging Markets Acquisition Corp (the “Company”), a special purpose acquisition company, today announced the closing of its initial public offering of 23,000,000 units at a price of $10.00 per unit, which includes the full exercise of the underwriters’ option to purchase an additional 3,000,000 units from the Company. The units began trading on The Nasdaq Global Market (“Nasdaq”) on December 1, 2021, under the ticker symbol “CMCAU”.

Each unit issued in the offering consists of one Class A ordinary share and one-half of one redeemable warrant. Each whole warrant entitles the holder thereof to purchase one Class A ordinary share at a price of $11.50 per share. Once the securities comprising the units commence separate trading, the Class A ordinary shares and redeemable warrants are expected to be respectively listed on Nasdaq under the symbols “CMCA” and “CMCAW”.
