President Marcos Jr. to Visit Canada in 2024 Following Trudeau’s Invitation

Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for a state visit to Canada in 2024. Discussions are currently underway to finalize the specific date for the visit, as announced by Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines David Hartman on Friday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the visit is likely to take place in the latter part of 2024, aligning with President Marcos' schedule. Hartman, speaking at the inaugural Foreign Service Institute (FSI) Ambassadors' Lecture Series in Pasay City, emphasized the visit's significance in deepening bilateral ties and charting a forward-looking partnership. The invitation was extended during the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta last September, and the visit will coincide with the 75th anniversary of Canada-Philippine diplomatic relations.

Hartman expressed optimism about increased engagements between Canada and the Philippines, highlighting areas of potential cooperation including defense, food security, energy, climate change, and investment. He noted the shared interests and values of both countries as a foundation for a robust partnership.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo echoed these sentiments, appreciating Canada's commitment to the Philippines, evidenced by various programs, funding initiatives, and efforts dedicated to upholding the rules-based international order. Manalo also pointed to developments like the ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership and the opening of a visa-processing center in Manila as steps toward stronger collaboration amid regional and global challenges.
