Expanding Local Businesses

The First Meeting of the 19th Session of the Legislative Council continued on its fourth day with discussions on the Proposal for the Allocation of the Prime Minister's Office and Departments under it for the Financial Year 2023/2024. The morning session began with deliberations on various issues. Review of annual business licenses and large scale projects in the downstream sector which drive national growth in non-oil and gas sector were among matters raised by Council Members from Titled Persons.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohd Yusuf proposed that the Central Bank as regulator should be more flexible and encourage financial institutions to actually help facilitate financial loans to companies, especially local ones including MSMEs to work together towards expanding their businesses.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Suyoi bin Haji Osman believed FDIs not only can contribute to national revenue but also provide job opportunities to locals who leave school and other educational institutions every year and seek jobs. In this case we should already identified the various existing jobs and skills and prepare them to fill the vacancies.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Ibrahim highlighted creating an application or similar platform that can gather all the data of youth engaged in business startups and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMEs to facilitate coordination of all the agencies. This includes tracking and required skills assistance so they can be channelled effectively and efficiently. Yang Berhormat hoped the matter can be studied thoroughly so that the youth's involvement in business and MSMEs can be expanded and give full benefits. It will be a unique platform towards helping their businesses achieve regional and international standards.
