Davao City — The fifth Kalutong Filipino festival opened on Friday in Davao City, dedicated to the preservation of the Philippines' heirloom cuisines and promoting the rich culinary heritage among the younger generation.
According to Philippines News Agency, the three-day event from April 19 to 21 aligns with Filipino Food Month, celebrated nationally as Buwan ng Kalutong Filipino. Tanya Rabat-Tan, Director of DOT-11, emphasized in her opening remarks the vital role of traditional dishes in reflecting and preserving the cultural identity and history of the community. She stated these cuisines contribute significantly to the local economy and tourism.
The festival, a collaboration with the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts and the Department of Agriculture (DA), features gastronomic journeys through Davao's provinces and educational sessions with local gastronomy experts. Rabat-Tan highlighted the importance of local produce and artisanal products in these heritage dishes.
Macario Gonzaga, DA-11 Director, also spoke at the event, underscoring the significance of recognizing farmers and fisherfolk who supply the essential ingredients that showcase Davao as a culinary hub. He described the event as a crucial initiative to educate and engage the youth in sustainable food production and cultural preservation.
The Kalutong Filipino festival not only celebrates Davao's culinary traditions but also aims to inspire the next generation to appreciate and continue these cultural practices.
