Brunei to Implement Compulsory Education from Age 5 in 2024

Brunei Darussalam - Beginning January 2024, the Compulsory Education Act, Chapter 211 in Brunei Darussalam will be amended to include compulsory schooling for children starting at age 5. This change applies to citizens and residents of the country. Children who turn 5 by 31st December are required to be registered for pre-school at the start of the following year. This update was provided by the Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary for Policy and Corporate at the Ministry of Education during an interview at the ministry on the morning of 9th December.

According to Radio Television Brunei, Professor Doctor Haji Noor Azam bin Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Haji Othman explained that the main objective of the amendment is to ensure that every child in the country receives equal opportunities and access to quality education from a young age. This aligns with the Ministry of Education's strategic plan and its commitments at the international level. He urged parents and guardians to cooperate to ensure their children's attendance in school, emphasizing the importance of not lagging behind in studies.

The Ministry of Education also welcomes students aged 5 to 14 who have not attended school for prolonged periods due to specific reasons. They are encouraged to register and attend school by contacting their respective schools or the Department of Schools through the Student Affairs Division.
