Delegating teachers, Al-Quran mu’allim, students and graduates of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Tahfiz Al-Quran Institute to lead Tarawih prayers at mosques, surau and religious halls in the country during Ramadhan is aimed at providing exposure that enhances their confidence to face and lead the public in prayers. Their involvement is also a step by the Ministry of Religious Affairs to transform locals into good examples in enlivening and glorifying the mosques through a number of programmes in Ramadhan.

Leading the Tarawih prayers is a great honour to the student because although they are still very young, they are capable of leading the congregants who comprised locals and foreigners from several countries who are either residing or working in the country.

The readiness to carry the big responsibility of leading the prayers, indirectly also helps to enhance their memorisation of Al-Quran. Before being appointed as Tarawih prayer leaders, they were briefed on the theory and practical aspects of Tarawih prayers to ensure they fully understand the correct method of leading prayers, including the recital of Al-Quran verses and movements in the prayers.

This year 135 imam or prayer leaders were selected to lead Tarawih prayers at 76 mosques, surau and religious halls throughout the country including suraus under the supervision of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and Royal Brunei Police Force.

Since the placement programme was inaugurated in 2006, it has received encouraging response from the public and congregants. Befitting the mission of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Tahfiz Al-Quran Institute to produce professional Al-Quran memorisers and experts, the programme is a response to His Majesty’s call to create a Zikir Nation with the characteristics of Baldatun Thayyibatun Wa Rabbun Ghafur.
