Power Fluctuations Disrupt Operations at NAIA Terminal 2 Amid High Heat

MANILA – The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 experienced significant disruptions on Wednesday due to power fluctuations lasting over three hours. The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) attributed the issue to high power loads resulting from an unusually high heat index.

According to Philippines News Agency, the terminal's air handling units, particularly in the departure area, were the primary systems affected. Technical evaluations revealed that the terminal circuit breakers were repeatedly tripping, necessitating recalibration by the engineering team. Following these issues, MIAA General Manager Eric Jose Ines directed a thorough investigation to ascertain any additional underlying causes of the power instability.

Despite the electrical disturbances, airport operations such as check-in procedures, boarding bridge functions, baggage systems, and security screenings remained operational. The MIAA confirmed that the power fluctuations did not result in any flight delays or cancellations. Measures were promptly taken to mitigate the impact on passengers and staff, including the deployment of industrial fans and distribution of bottled water within the terminal.

General Manager Ines issued an apology to passengers for the inconvenience and emphasized the airport's commitment to enhancing its maintenance protocols to avoid recurrence of such incidents in the future.
