Recycle Drive

As an effort to educate the community about proper waste disposal, Green Brunei welcomes the public to participate in the Recycle Campaign by bringing recyclable items. The campaign is an initiative to support the efforts of the Brunei Darussalam Climate Change Secretariat, BCCS in reducing solid waste by 1 kilogram per person per day by 2035.

Items received are paper, newspapers, boxes, metal that are cleaned and emptied; and electronic waste namely computer equipment. The campaign will be held this Sunday, 5th of February 2023 at the ground floor, Kontena Park parking area, from 9 in the morning to 1 in the afternoon. To date, Green Brunei has collected 152,100 kilogrammes of recyclable items since 2014.

Price Control Act, Chapter 142

Two business premises were each issued with $500 compound fines for offences under the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and its Regulations. The offences were found during a routine inspection by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics, DEPS, Ministry of Finance and Economy in January 2023.

Syarikat Naseem Enterprise and De Rimba Department Store Sdn. Bhd. were found to have failed to display price tags on some items sold such as vegetables, fruits, powdered milk formula and canned liquid milk.

Last month, 16 Warning Notices were issued to 16 business premises for selling above the maximum price set for cooking oil products and failing to comply with the rules for displaying price tags, namely not displaying price tags and displaying misleading price tags. Businesses are reminded to always be responsible and conduct business ethically by complying with the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and its regulations in an effort to develop a resilient domestic business ecosystem.

Health Check-Up for Intending Pilgrims

Intending pilgrims from Temburong District who have been selected to perform haj this year, underwent a health check-up at Pengiran Isteri Hajah Mariam Hospital, 1st February morning.

Health check-up is open from 8:30 in the morning to 12 noon and from 1:30 to 4 in the afternoon. The health check-up is one of the preparations carried out by the Department of Haj Affairs, Ministry of Religious Affairs before intending pilgrims leave for the holy land. In addition, the Haj Course for Temburong District also started on 27th January.

Girl Guides Association Doa Kesyukuran

The Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam held a Doa Kesyukuran Ceremony and Mass Fardhu 'Asar Prayer in conjunction with its 70th anniversary. The ceremony was held on 1st February afternoon, at its Headquarters in Anggerek Desa.

Among those present were Datin Paduka Hajah Zaharah binti Haji Idris and Datin Hajah Masni binti Haji Mohd Ali, Lifetime Vice-Presidents of the Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam. The reading of Ratib Al-Attas and Surah Yasin was led by the Young Leaders of Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA. The ceremony aimed to raise gratitude and strengthen relations among members of the association. The association now has 900 registered members from all the four districts.

BIBD 30th Anniversary Commemoration Gallery

The important events and achievements of Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, BIBD throughout its 30 years of establishment were showcased in the BIBD 30th Anniversary Commemoration Gallery at the Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja in the capital. The gallery is opened to the public until the end of March.

BIBD started out with the official opening of 'Islamic Bank of Brunei Berhad', IBB on 13th January 1993 until the merger of IBB and Islamic Development Bank of Brunei, IDBB into BIBD in 2005. According to Dayang Hajah Nurul Akmar Binti Haji Mohd Jaafar, BIBD Chief Marketing Officer, since its establishment BIBD has achieved a number of prideworthy achievements. The cycle of BIBD product development and services with the support of shareholders and customers have made BIBD into a financial institution that can provide services needed in line with international standards.

The gallery has more than eight sections among them the 'Time Tunnel' which showcases the bank's 30 year journey. Also exhibited were awards received and recognitions from international bodies. Dayang Hajah Adina Binti Haji Azahari, Corporate Relations Manager, said that BIBD's support for the local industry began with industries such as Oil and Gas as well as FDI's. The bank also supports several small and medium enterprises, SME's through the SME 360 service. Last year, BIBD held the SME 360 series which were a series of forums highlighting the challenges faced by SMEs.

The public who wish to find out more about BIBD can visit the gallery, which is open every day except for Friday, from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon.

Pottery Making Process Creativity

Pottery making requires patience, diligence and creativity, combined together to produce highly distinctive artistic pieces which can be either decorative or useful. Anyone who is interested in pottery making can now try it out with the help of a local expert.

Adam Diongchee Huat, a pottery making teacher, clay is the main component of pottery making. The clay collected is wet down with a small amount of water before leaving it for a few days. The textured clay can be formed by hand into pots, glasses, plates and others, with the help of a potter's wheel.

For those who are creative. the pottery can be painted or drawn on until it becomes a highly valuable artwork.

With creativity and artistic abilities, the pottery produced has the potential to become a highly valuable product.

Effort to Publicise History

In line with its vision as an authoritative Brunei historical resource centre, the Brunei History Centre continues to strive to sustain the history of Brunei Darussalam to all levels of society. Various projects, programmes and activities have been implemented by the History Centre to preserve and sustain the history of Brunei Darussalam to all levels of society in this country. From the beginning of its establishment, the research carried out not only focused in the country, but was also carried out abroad, including in Sabah, Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia, China, Egypt, Makkah, Madinah, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

Until now, research projects and implementations are still being carried out continuously to further improve the quality of research on the history of Brunei. In addition, the History Centre always strives to enrich Brunei's historical reference materials and resources from time to time through the Search and Purchase of historical materials and resources from within and outside the country.

Among the main tasks of the History Centre is also collecting Brunei's history written works for archiving and research as well as coordination to control any deviation of facts and sources from its origin. To date, there are over 60 thousand Library collection materials and nearly seven thousand Borneo Research Division collection materials.

The History Centre also undertakes the task of disseminating history to the public through the implementation of various initiatives, programmes and activities. The implementation, among others aims to improve the understanding and assimilation of history in line with the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the History Centre Action Plan.

Islamic Literature Night

"Pemerintahan Negara Brunei Darussalam menurut Ahli Sunnah wal Jamaah" is one of six new books launched during the Islamic Literature Night in conjunction with the Maulidur Rasul Shallahu Alaihi Wassalam, 31st January night. The Literature Night which is an annual programme of the Islamic Da'wah Centre, Ministry of Religious Affairs to enliven the Maulidur Rasul celebration, took place at the International Convention Centre, Berakas.

The book published by the Islamic Da'wah Centre was launched by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs. The book "Pemerintahan Negara Brunei Darussalam menurut Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah" was written by the Minister of Religious Affairs. The ceremony was highlighted with poetry declamation performance by the Minister of Religious Affairs and Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti. Presentation of souvenirs to the writers, judges and winners of the Islamic Creative and Non-Creative Art Writing Contest was also held.
