The emergence of the COVID-19 epidemic has changed the daily routine of people around the world. We, in Brunei Darussalam are not exempted from the need to get used to the new norms of living. These include festive occasions such as wedding ceremonies. Before COVID-19, solemnization ceremonies were held at mosques or residences, but now it is only held in moderation whereby all solemnization ceremonies are held in the Syarie’ Lower Courts in the four districts. Based on statistics from the Bandar Seri Begawan Syariah Court, 2 hundred and 76 couples nationwide have conducted solemnization ceremonies to-date since the Syariah Court allowed for solemnization ceremonies to be held starting on the 28th of March.


Brunei Muara District recorded 186 marriages, 32 couples in Tutong District, 47 couples in Belait District and Temburong District recorded 11 couples.


In the Bandar Seri Begawan Syariah Court, solemnization ceremonies were held in accordance with the Ministry of Health guidelines and adhering to rules and regulations stipulated including maintaining social distancing. According to Awang Mohammad Azmi @ Mohd Asrin bin Haji Mohd Jair, Deputy Registrar of Muslim Marriages, Divorce, Annulments and Ruju’, the couples must first submit the completed marriage application form according to the area of residence, following the guidelines or regulations stipulated by the syariah court and the couple to be solemnised must be in good health.


The ceremony took place in simplicity and only attended by the marriage official; the groom and bride; a wali; two witnesses; two family members from both sides and taking place for not more than 20 minutes.


Several newly-weds who decided to continue with their solemnization ceremony during the COVID-19 season expressed their gratitude.


The Syariah Court has set the solemnization ceremony in the Brunei Muara District and Temburong District to be held during office hours. While in Tutong District, solemnization ceremonies will be held every Thursday and Saturday, in the morning only while the in the Belait District it will be held every Thursday and Saturday in the morning and afternoon. All solemnization ceremonies are held in the Syariah Lower Courts in the respective districts.
