By just following an online calligraphy writing activity organised by the Islamic Calligraphy and Arts Studies Centre of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah last year, a teenager became interested in the field. She continues to study it slowly and the hobby has eventually become a source of income.
Dayang Nurul Amal Syafiqah binti Abdul Sara, aged 21, has never joined a formal calligraphy class and learns more on her own through online tutorials. The second-year student of Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Universiti Teknologi Brunei actively promotes her work on social media and receives many orders from customers to be used as souvenirs and gifts.
Among the types of calligraphy produced by Dayang Nurul Amal Syafiqah are nasakh and thuluth calligraphy. Realising that Islamic calligraphy has a great opportunity to be developed, she wishes to be able to take the jawi calligraphy further through a combination of technology so that her work is better, neater and more attractive.
