Singapore Red Cross Commits USD50,000 to Philippine Flood Relief Efforts

SINGAPORE – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has pledged USD50,000 to aid the Philippine Red Cross in responding to the devastating floods caused by Super Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon in Metro Manila.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary General and CEO of the Singapore Red Cross, the funds will support essential relief and assistance for the communities affected by the intensified rainfall, floods, and landslides. The Philippine Red Cross has activated its Emergency Response Unit, which includes teams specialized in search and rescue operations in the flood-stricken areas. They have also been instrumental in evacuation efforts and have deployed multi-purpose response trucks to aid residents.

The severe weather conditions have led to widespread impacts across the Philippines, particularly in Northern and Central Luzon, and extensive flooding in Metro Manila where the Marikina River rose above 20 meters. Over 887,000 individuals have been displaced, facing a lack of water, electricity, and basic services.

In a related development, prominent figures such as Heart Evangelista, president of the Senate Spouses Foundation Inc., and Ma. Anna Kathryna Yu-Pimentel, have been active in distributing aid. Evangelista, alongside other Senate spouses, distributed essential goods to those displaced in Marikina City, one of the areas worst affected by the flooding. Senator Grace Poe also initiated a soup kitchen in Manila to support flood victims, highlighting ongoing community efforts to manage the crisis.

This humanitarian crisis comes at a critical time as the Department of Budget and Management prepares to propose a PHP6.352-trillion National Expenditures Program to Congress, focusing on enhancing flood control measures to prevent future disasters.
