DOT-Cordillera Advocates for Enhanced Experiential Tourism to Boost Visitor Returns

BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Tourism in the Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR) is urging tourism stakeholders to innovate and capitalize on experiential tourism strategies to foster increased and repeated visitation to the region. This approach aims to enrich the tourist experience by offering interactive and cultural immersion activities.

According to Philippine News Agency, the objective is to transition from merely showcasing the region’s destinations to providing visitors with engaging experiences that allow them to connect deeply with the local culture and traditions. In a recent phone interview, Ganongan emphasized the importance of creating activities that enable tourists to actively participate and gain a personal understanding of the Cordillera’s heritage.

The region witnessed a significant influx of tourists in 2023, with figures approaching the pre-pandemic peak of 2.01 million visitors in 2019. To sustain and build on this momentum, Ganongan highlighted several experiential offerings, such as strap or loom weaving workshops where tourists can learn the process of fabric making, thus fostering a greater appreciation for the region’s textile crafts.

Further, she suggested that engaging with Cordillera’s indigenous practices, such as dances, chants, and attire, as well as experiencing local customs like drinking tapuey (rice wine), could significantly enhance tourists’ understanding and enjoyment. Participating in seasonal activities like the harvest of Sagada oranges and La Trinidad strawberries offers additional unique experiences for visitors.

Ganongan also proposed the development of loop tours that interconnect various provinces and landmarks within the region, facilitating a comprehensive and immersive travel circuit for tourists seeking a deeper connection with the area’s cultural and natural assets.
