Six First Place Winners Selected from Thousands of Global Photo Submissions Surrounding 2022 Theme Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean

New York, New York, June 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The winners of the ninth annual United Nations World Oceans Day Photo Competition were announced today during the United Nations World Oceans Day (UNWOD) 2022 event at the UN Headquarters in New York. The free competition, which launched this past March, explored the six thematic categories linked to the overarching 2022 World Oceans day theme: “Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean.” World-renowned judges including wildlife photographer Rathika Ramasamy, Conservation Photojournalist & Marine Biologist Sirachai Arunrugstichai, and Underwater Photographer Y. Zin Kim, selected first, second, and third place winners for the categories: Above Water Seascapes, Underwater Seascapes, Revitalization, Coastal Communities, Ocean Critters, and Nature-Based Solutions & Ocean Exploration. Winners were selected from the thousands of global entries made by both amateur and professional photographers. The United Nations World Oceans Day event and the Photo Competition are hosted by the United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, produced with the contribution of Oceanic Global and made possible by La Mer. The annual competition is curated by Ellen Cuylaerts, and coordinated with DivePhotoGuide (DPG) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

Dominica Prepares to Face the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season with Climate Resilient Infrastructure

Roseau, June 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Commonwealth of Dominica, a small island nation in the Caribbean, is not leaving its fate up to chance as they face the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which is predicted to be particularly stormy this year.

While Dominica cannot prevent hurricanes, they are doing all it can to ensure the safety of its citizens. The government has constructed emergency shelters, trained members in vulnerable communities, and educated citizens on ways they can safeguard themselves.

Early preparation and understanding of the risk is key to being hurricane resilient and climate-ready.

A Stormy Hurricane Season Predicted

The Atlantic hurricane season typically runs from 1 June to 30 November, during these months, tropical storms are most likely to form and wreak havoc in the Caribbean.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting “above-average hurricane activity” this year.

“NOAA predicts a 65% chance of an above-normal season, a likely range of 14 to 21 named storms of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes, including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5),” the NOAA stated in a recent press release.

Several climate factors can be attributed to the predicted hurricane season. These factors include La Nina, warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and weaker tropical Atlantic trade winds.

Climate change has led to the warming of oceans, which leads to more water pumped into the sky, making hurricanes more powerful, and rising sea levels mean that storm surges are becoming more dangerous.

Lessons Learned

Dominica is on the frontline of climate change and is a target of natural disasters, mainly hurricanes and tropical storms. The nation does not produce greenhouse gases yet is among the main victims in the battle against climate change.

In 2017, Hurricane Maria damaged nearly every building, destroying nearly a quarter of them. Maria felled rainforests and knocked out the electricity, communications, and water supplies.

Since then, the nation has been committed to building back better, with the aim to become the world’s first climate-resilient country.

“Despite our disadvantages in Dominica, we are not leaving our fate up to chance, since 2017 we have taken decisive actions to realize our vision to build resilience within key sectors with support from local stakeholders as well regional, international agencies and organizations such as European Union,” said Dr the Hon Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister recently advised citizens to remain cautious and shared tips on how one can safeguard themselves and their communities in times of a natural disaster.

In May 2022, the government of Dominica commissioned two regional emergency shelters to which 300 – 500 people in Castle Bruce and Jimmit will benefit. These self-contained facilities can house those affected by a severe storm for about two weeks.

The shelters were built at a cost of EC$33 million with funding from the European Union, and feature wide spaces to serve as dormitories, storage rooms, kitchens, washrooms, medical centres, laundry facilities, administrative offices and alternate water and power supplies.

The two shelters are part of our resilience journey to combat climate change and lay a sustainable development path to a Dynamic Dominica.

“Hurricane Maria taught us unless we do this thing properly and we do it right we will be devastated each time because we really cannot prevent ourselves from being hit by a hurricane. But we are hoping that with our resilient building in terms of our infrastructure our roads, our bridges, our schools, and the health centres we can add some resilience and we can protect ourselves, our societies, and our communities from any such onslaught that may come in the future,” said Hon. Reginald Austrie, Member of Parliament for the Cottage Constituency.

Following Hurricane Maria, the government created the Climate Resilience Execution Agency for Dominica (CREAD). Its purpose is to lead and coordinate strategic initiatives across all sectors in the country with the goal of leading the climate resilience mission.

“In the Dynamic Dominica that we are creating, all must have access to safe shelter; we are keeping true to our promise of 5,000 resilient homes for the people of Dominica. We do not ever want our citizens to revisit the despair resulting from displacement and homelessness due to Hurricane Maria,” the Prime Minister said.

Building Back Better

When Hurricane Maria hit Dominica in 2017, it caused damage worth an estimated 220 per cent of its GDP. The majority of the small island’s roads, hospitals and housing sectors were also damaged. However, thanks to international, regional, and internal funds like that of the country’s long-running Citizenship by Investment Programme, Dominica has managed to recover at great lengths.

The Government of Dominica continues to build resilient climate infrastructure and develop strategies to strengthen the systems to boost capacity at the individual and community levels to more effectively respond to disaster impacts.

For several decades, Dominica has used funds generated by its Citizenship by Investment (CB) Programme to realise its ambitions towards constructing climate-resilient infrastructure that can withstand natural disasters, while creating lasting jobs in construction and tourism.

These projects include building 5000 climate-resilient homes, world-class hospitals, healthcare centres, and community centres. The nation has also invested and begun work on a Geothermal Power Plant in an effort to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

Philips’ Future Health Index 2022 report shows healthcare leaders are rebooting priorities as they emerge from the pandemic

Now in its seventh year, the Future Health Index 2022 report, based on proprietary research from almost 3,000 respondents conducted across 15 countries, explores how healthcare leaders are harnessing the power of data and digital technology as they look to address their key challenges coming out of the pandemic.

The 2022 report paints a picture of a sector that is radically re-evaluating priorities as it strives to deliver improved patient care. “As we emerge from the pandemic, healthcare leaders worldwide are embarking on a reboot,” said Jan Kimpen, Chief Medical Officer, Philips. “Many are refocusing on both new and existing priorities, from addressing staff shortages and extending care delivery, to leveraging big data and predictive analytics.”

Staff satisfaction and retention top the priority list for healthcare leaders
Globally, around one in three healthcare leaders (30%) say staff satisfaction and retention combined is a top priority. However, what is driving this priority differs from country to country. For example, in the USA and Germany staff satisfaction and retention is driven by the ‘great resignation’. In India, the ever-increasing demand for more healthcare professionals is the predominant driver. Across all countries, healthcare leaders’ investments in digital technologies will help to improve the staff experience.

While data is seen as an enabler, the potential of predictive analytics remains unfulfilled
Healthcare leaders have confidence in predictive analytics with 71% trusting predictive analytics in clinical settings, and 72% in operational settings. Overall, healthcare leaders see the positive impact of predictive analytics, particularly in health outcomes, patient experience and staff experience, and more than half (56%) have already adopted, or are in the process of adopting, predictive analytics in some form. However, uptake remains uneven, with a marked difference in adoption among developed and emerging countries (65% vs 48%). The FHI 2022 research also indicates even those who are furthest along in adoption of predictive analytics are not leveraging the full potential of the technology.

Overcoming the barriers to effective data use is crucial to gain widespread adoption
While confident in the value of data, healthcare leaders remain frustrated by ongoing barriers to effective data usage, including siloed data (51%) and infrastructure limitations (23%). With cyberattacks increasingly targeting the healthcare sector, one in five (21%) cite concerns about data privacy and security as a top barrier to using data to its full potential. They also say greater data security and privacy systems and protocols are the top way to strengthen their trust in predictive analytics in both clinical (38%) and operational (35%) settings. Additionally, only 19% of healthcare leaders have all the internal expertise they need to fully use the data they have available, while 24% cite the availability of data specialists as a top factor in helping to better utilize data. Despite seeing the potential of data, as a result of these frustrations, nearly half of healthcare leaders (48%) view data as more of a burden than an asset today.

Leaders are fast-tracking social responsibility
The pandemic threw a spotlight on health inequality and healthcare leaders are responding. One-quarter (25%) see addressing health inequality as a priority today, compared to only 12% in 2021. Technology can play a part: two in three healthcare leaders (68%) agree that predictive analytics can have a positive impact on helping to reduce health disparities by providing fast and accurate insights on risk scores to help identify more vulnerable groups for proactive planning to help better manage community health issues like disease outbreaks, cancer incidences and more.

The 2022 report also sees healthcare leaders fast-tracking their sustainability plans. In 2021, just 4% of healthcare leaders worldwide were prioritizing environmental sustainability. This figure has jumped to 24% today; a more than six-fold increase year-over-year.

Plug to Build Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Generation Plant in Europe at Port of Antwerp-Bruges

Plug’s 100 MW Electrolyzers Will Produce 35 Tons Per Day of Green Hydrogen for European Market

LATHAM, N.Y., June 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ: PLUG), a leading provider of turnkey hydrogen solutions for the global green hydrogen economy, will build a 35-tons-per-day green hydrogen generation plant at Port of Antwerp-Bruges in the heart of Europe.

Plug signed a 30-year concession agreement to build the plant at the Belgian port, the second largest in Europe. Plug plans to erect a 100-megawatt green hydrogen plant, using its own electrolyzer and liquefaction technology, on 28 acres of land leased under the agreement. Plug will produce up to 12,500 tons per year of liquid and gaseous green hydrogen for the European market.

Construction of the plant will begin upon completion of the permitting process, anticipated in late 2023. Initial production of green hydrogen is expected in late 2024, and plant commissioning will be in 2025.

A hydrogen hub of the future

Port of Antwerp-Bruges sits in a strategic location in Europe. At the center of the largest chemical industry cluster in Europe and close to the North Sea, it provides transportation connections to Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, U.K., and France. Ideal site for generation of hydrogen

The site location provides the opportunity for a ready supply of electricity from on-site and site-adjacent wind turbines generating dozens of megawatts, with an electric interconnection point less than a mile away. In addition, the site offers water, road, rail, and pipeline access for the delivery of green hydrogen to customers. An open-access hydrogen pipeline will be built along the site, and Plug has signed a contract with Fluxys to engage in a feasibility study for enabling a connection to the pipeline, which will be part of a European open-access hydrogen backbone.

Plug will build in the port’s NextGen District, an area dedicated to companies supporting the circular economy. Leveraging the cluster being assembled in the NextGen district, Plug is exploring partnerships to complete the circular use of wastewater expelled during the production of green hydrogen.

More than 1,500 acres of covered warehousing at Port of Antwerp-Bruges supports heavy manufacturing industries. Emerging technology gives first ever global view of hidden vessels

Satellite radar and machine learning publicly reveal previously unseen vessel activity around the world

Washington, D.C., June 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Global Fishing Watch has developed and publicly released the first ever global map of previously undetected dark fleets, or vessels that do not broadcast their location or appear in public monitoring systems.

Powered by satellite radar imagery and machine learning, the map layer is updated daily within the main Global Fishing Watch map application. The portal is available for free to anyone in the world with an internet connection, helping arm authorities, researchers and the public alike with the power to monitor vessel activity in all coastal waters, identify dark fleet patterns and build the necessary understanding to quantify threats to the ocean. The user-friendly new map layer helps create equitable access to marine-related data in time for World Ocean Day on June 8.

The lack of information pertaining to how and where vessels are fishing has clouded our understanding of the true global footprint of fishing activity. This makes meaningful change difficult. To see these impacts, satellite radar technology, known as synthetic aperture radar (SAR), functions day and night in all types of weather and can generate imagery despite cloud cover or storm systems, resulting in detection capabilities that are significantly advanced over other satellite-mounted sensors.

“It is surprising how little we have known to date about the true scale of human activity on the water,” said David Kroodsma, director of research and innovation at Global Fishing Watch. “If you combine vessels that intentionally shut off their signal with the significant number of boats that don’t make their whereabouts known in public systems at all, you end up with gaps in data, monitoring and accountability. We are using satellite radar imagery to reduce that information gap and put our findings at the fingertips of those who want to ensure our ocean is managed equitably and sustainably.”

The new global map layer draws from a massive data-processing pipeline and uses machine learning to crunch petabytes, or millions of gigabytes, of radar imagery taken by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellites. By analyzing the entire archive of Sentinel-1 radar imagery, Global Fishing Watch has made 20 million detections of sea-going vessels greater than approximately 10 meters in length—and matched these detections to 100 billion GPS points from vessels broadcasting their position on the automatic identification system. This matching differentiates vessels that broadcast their position from those that remain dark in public monitoring systems, resulting in more comprehensive views of vessel movements across the global ocean. This information can help authorities pinpoint areas with suspicious activity and identify vessel patterns that may indicate illegal activity or previously unquantified fishing pressures.

Global Fishing Watch used satellite radar and optical imagery to reveal around 900 vessels of Chinese origin fishing illegally in North Korean waters in violation of United Nations sanctions—the largest known case of illegal fishing by an industrial fleet operating in another nation’s waters. Global Fishing Watch has since improved and expanded its use of satellite radar to study previously unseen fishing activity near marine protected areas in the Mediterranean Sea and hotspots of previously hidden activity in coastal waters around Africa. This emerging method of “seeing” vessels is revealing that the ocean is far busier than conventional monitoring systems show.

“While there are often legitimate reasons for not broadcasting a vessel’s location—not all governments require it—illegal operators will often turn off their signals to conceal their activity,” added Kroodsma. “The use of satellite radar to detect and map previously hidden and potentially illegal or harmful activity has opened a new realm of possibilities for remote sensing and big tech’s battle for the environment.”

Amplifying the potential of satellite radar technology, Global Fishing Watch partnered with the Defense Innovation Unit in July 2021 to host the xView3 competition. The challenge invited machine learning developers from all over the world to create and submit computer algorithms to help detect dark vessels, drawing 1,900 registrants from 67 countries. Global Fishing Watch is using the winning entries announced earlier this year to refine and advance dark vessel detection methods at global scale, and expects to be able to shed light on many human activities on the ocean in the near future.

About satellite radar imagery: Satellite radar is able to overcome limitations of other satellite-based monitoring systems with its ability to see through rain, darkness and cloud cover. Radar can detect at-sea vessels and structures in any weather conditions and its imaging capabilities make it one of the most powerful tools of remote sensing. Satellite radar is an active sensor that shoots microwaves to the earth surface and measures the amplitude and phase of the signals that are reflected back from objects on the ground and water, known as backscatter. The images formed from this backscatter contain rich information about size, orientation, composition, condition and texture of the features on the water. These imaging systems hold an advantage over passive satellite sensors, such as electro-optical imagery, which is similar to taking a picture with a camera and relies on sunlight and/or the infrared radiation emitted by objects on the ground. This latter method can be confounded by cloud cover, haze, weather events, and seasonal darkness at high latitudes. Satellite radar by comparison has proven to be the most consistent option for detecting vessels at sea.

PHILADELPHIA, June 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — New research released today from FreedomPay, conducted in partnership with Cornell University, a leader in Hotel Administration and Hospitality Management, explores Gen Z student’s attitudes towards data privacy and their willingness to share their personal information. Age, email, income, and GPS location were among other personal details the study explored and participants willingness to share with payment platforms and merchants.

The research – which surveyed 200 Cornell Generation Z students, defined as those born in 1995 or later – found that the perceived privacy level of a piece of information has a significant impact on participants’ willingness to share with third parties, such as banks and retailers.

To start, the researchers first determined how participants might categorize the privacy level for several pieces of data. Placed on a 6-point scale, with 1 equaling extremely unlikely to share and 6 equaling extremely likely to share, the data items were sorted as follows:

Rewards Incentivize Sharing
The findings indicate that customers are more inclined to give out personal information if there is a reward involved, and participants were clear about how much – and what data – they would be more willing to share.

Within these privacy level categories of low, medium, and high, data in the medium category was the most likely to be swayed by a monetary reward. The research also suggested that Gen Z appears to be generally less willing to share their personal information than other groups.

The study found that a $15 reward incentive seemed to have limited impact on respondent’s willingness to disclose high-level privacy details. On the other side of the spectrum, a monetary reward also seemed to have a minimal influence for low level data sharing, considering that participants are generally more agreeable to part with this information.

Taking a closer look at the data, in offering Gen Zers a $15 reward, their willingness to share data increases across the three privacy categories:

  • 11% more likely to share low-privacy data
  • 27% like to share medium-privacy information
  • High-privacy data is more likely to be shared 24%

Additionally, the research revealed preferences in terms of the rewards offered for sharing information as well:

  • Participants prefer cash discount to loyalty points (at 69% and 31% respectively)
  • They are likely to choose loyalty points if that value is 20x greater than cash discount value
  • For those Gen Zers who prefer loyalty points, food & beverage was the most preferred category (at 44)
  • The least popular options include debit cards, gas, grocery stores, and the hospitality industry
  • Other participants were equally likely to choose food & beverage and retailers equally

Among the generations, Gen Zers earned the lowest score revealing they are less willing to share personal details than other generations – re-emphasizing that this generation does place a high priority on privacy issues.

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 08, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A Nobel Prize-winning economist has confirmed ‘learning gains among the largest ever measured’ in schools by any major study in emerging markets.

The study, led by Professor Michael Kremer, 2019 Nobel Prize winner, finds children living in underserved communities receive over 53% more learning in NewGlobe supported schools throughout their early childhood and primary education compared to students in other schools.

The findings were announced by Professor Kremer at the Education World Forum and suggest a potential solution to learning poverty.

Replicated across public education systems, the gains would put African children from underserved communities on track to outperform or match peers in countries with incomes four times higher.

The groundbreaking study finds children taught using New Globe’s methods are three times more likely to be able to read at age seven. The World Bank estimates 90% of 10 year olds in Africa can’t read.

The most disadvantaged students gain the most. Girls make the same learning leap as boys.

NewGlobe delivers a standard deviation increase of 1.35 in pre-primary learning and 0.81 in primary learning, easily in the top 1% of learning gains ever rigorously studied at scale in emerging markets.

The two-year study is based on a large-scale randomized control trial of more than 10,000 students from low socioeconomic backgrounds in Kenya.

  • After two years, primary students taught using NewGlobe’s methods are nearly a whole additional year of learning ahead of students in other schools.
  • For pre-primary students, two years’ teaching using NewGlobe’s methods puts them a year-and-a-half of additional learning ahead of other students.
  • 82% of Grade 1 students – six/seven-years-old – in NewGlobe-supported schools can read a sentence, compared with 27% in other schools.
  • Students starting from lowest learning levels gain the most. NewGlobe-supported students outperform their peers across all test scores, but with differences greatest for students with the lowest prior learning.
