RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, May 14, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Under the patronage of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), Singapore’s prestigious Global Schools Foundation is opening its first school campus in the Saudi capital in September 2022. The One World International School (OWIS) will be the fourth school to be established in Riyadh under the RCRC’s International Schools Attraction Program, an initiative to bring international schools to the Saudi capital in partnership with the Kingdom’s Ministry of Investment and the Ministry of Education.

In conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebration, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Brunei Darussalam held a Diplomatic Luncheon. The event took place at the Residence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia in Jalan Kebangsaan.

Among those present were several cabinet ministers and representatives from friendly nations. His Excellency Doctor Sujatmiko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to Brunei Darussalam expressed his gratefulness for the relationship between the people of the two countries.

Temporary Suspension On Cross Border Activities

With the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and in reference to a Media Release issued by the Prime Minister's Office on the extension of temporary suspension on cross-border activities dated 30th April 2022.

The Prime Minister's Office informs that the Temporary Suspension on Cross-Border Activities is extended by 16 days from the 16th until 31st May 2022. This applies to entry of foreign nationals via land and sea ports, including transits through Brunei Darussalam, except for entry and transit travels that have been granted approval by the Government of Brunei Darussalam.

Entry and transits through Brunei Darussalam may only be considered for transit vehicles with Transit Permits that are issued by the Government of Brunei Darussalam, provided that the travellers have attained endorsement from their local authorities. This will be subject to existing entry conditions and procedures, for the purposes of Official Government travel; Students attending school; Emergency services such as ambulances, police and military; and vaccinated foreign-registered transport operators with Cross-Country Permits issued by the Government of Brunei Darussalam for import deliveries of essential goods.

And entry and exit-country travel of commuters via land and sea ports for the purpose of work.

Special Summit’s Plenary Session One

His Majesty along with other ASEAN Leaders proceeded to the Loy Henderson International Conference Room to attend the ASEAN-U.S. Special Summit. During Plenary Session One, His Majesty in a titah expresses appreciation to the United States for its renewed commitment to climate change, as seen at the COP-26 in Scotland and congratulates President Biden's personal efforts to work with other major powers to implement the Paris Agreement.

His Majesty in the titah adds that ASEAN is also placing greater emphasis on addressing climate change including through the establishment of an ASEAN Climate Change Centre, His Majesty also thanked the U.S. for its readiness to provide a Science Fellow to support the creation of the Centre in Brunei Darussalam. Looking ahead, His Majesty believes that there is more to be done in taking forward commitments in climate action, especially through capacity building. His Majesty affirms that Brunei Darussalam is prioritising efforts to ensure its economy remains resilient and sustainable through utilisation of low carbon technologies, as well as promoting initiatives aimed at lowering net carbon emission. His Majesty welcomes the U.S.' engagement in climate change initiatives in the region. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

The Plenary Session One on Climate was chaired by Her Excellency Kamala D. Harris, Vice President of the United States of America. In her welcoming remarks, the Vice President of the United States of America noted the impacts of the climate crisis on ASEAN and the U.S. and therefore called for both sides to raise collective ambition and meet infrastructure needs in a sustainable manner. The U.S. has launched initiatives on clean energy and climate smart infrastructure; partnerships on sustainable transportation and forest conservation; as well as satellite data sharing to respond to extreme weather. Special Summit’s Plenary Session Two

During the Plenary Session Two of the ASEAN-U.S. Special Summit, His Majesty a titah expresses pleasure to be attending the first in-person ASEAN Summit with a Dialogue Partner since the outbreak of COVID-19. His Majesty thanked His Excellency Joseph R. Biden Junior, President of the United States America for his support of Brunei Darussalam's Chairmanship of ASEAN last year and congratulated His Excellency Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia as the Chairman of ASEAN this year.

His Majesty in the titah also expressed his pleasure for the celebration of 45 years of ASEAN-U.S. dialogue relations as the U.S. has always been an important strategic partner of ASEAN by upholding peace, investing in its economies and supporting development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ASEAN benefited from the U.S.' support through the provision of vaccines and medical equipment. His Majesty commends President Biden's personal leadership on this matter, including the hosting of the Second COVID-19 Summit. Looking towards the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-U.S. relations, His Majesty hopes for continued peace, stability and sustainable development for all the peoples in the Indo-Pacific.

To realise this, it must be ensured that cooperation will bring greater benefit to as many people as possible, through a more strategic and comprehensive approach. Among others, this would require a substantial increase in the depth and scope of exchanges, training and capacity building for the peoples, including building up on initiatives such as the ASEAN Junior Fellowship Programme and the ASEAN- U.S. Internship Programme. His Majesty believes that such efforts will greatly contribute to enhancing trust and understanding between peoples, especially the youth, who are the foundation of ASEAN-U.S. relations in the future.

His Majesty also encourages for new areas of common interest and work to be identified for mutual benefits, in which one area that is important to the peoples' livelihood is the management, safety and security of the maritime domain. ASEAN commenced work on the Blue Economy in 2021 to promote the sustainable use of our maritime resources. With the release of the U.S. Blue Economy Strategic Plan in 2021, His Majesty highlights that it is timely to expand cooperation into this area, as ASEAN and the U.S. can mutually benefit from each other's experiences.

His Majesty noted that cooperation in the maritime domain, including the South China Sea, is in line with international law and the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. With one third of international shipping passing through the South China Sea, ensuring peace and security is of paramount importance globally. Therefore, the adherence by all parties to international law, including upholding the principles of the U.N. Charter is vital. His Majesty affirms that Brunei Darussalam will continue to foster a calm and peaceful environment, and encourage all countries, big and small, to prioritise dialogue and cooperation.

His Majesty also welcomes the U.S.' announcement to enhance education and people-to-people engagements with ASEAN, as well as the US' proposal on the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework which can promote growth and create opportunities. Face-To-Face School Session Begins

50,000 students from all levels including those aged 5 to 11 regardless of vaccination status, began their face to face schooling session yesterday. To ensure that the learning session runs smoothly, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Minister of Education yesterday morning made a visit to three government primary schools in the Belait District.

At the Sungai Teraban Primary School, the delegation took a closer look at the school's implementation of Standard Operating Procedures, SOPs and the facilities provided to curb COVID-19. To ensure the health and safety of the school's staff and students, the implementation of ART screening is still maintained 3 times a week, that is, every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

During the first week of school reopening, several activities under "Siuknya Ke Sekolah" programme was carried out by the school such as doa and zikir, ice-breaking and motivation sessions.

Such a programme was also conducted at the Kuala Belait Primary School aimed to further help the students' mind-set to be more positive.

Visit to Several Primary Schools

Physical schooling sessions in Tutong District also ran smoothly and orderly. Most of the students who started the school session were very excited as they were able to go back to school as usual and meet the teacher. Yesterday morning, the Deputy Minister of Education held a visit to 3 primary schools in the district.

Datin Seri Paduka Doctor Hajah Rumaizah binti Haji Muhd Salleh took a closer look at the implementation and guidelines of the SOPs in Bakiau Primary School, Panchong Primary School and Rambai Primary School. During the visit, students in the schools complied with the SOPs by wearing face masks, scanning the Bruhealth application and checking body temperature before entering the classroom. The school also made some preparations so that students feel more comfortable. For pre -school students, the day is very meaningful to them as they step into a new world and become school students.

Meeting Between Asean Leaders and American Business Leaders

ASEAN and the U.S. have embarked on numerous initiatives such as the ASEAN-U.S. Energy Cooperation Work Plan 2021-2025 and the ASEAN-U.S. Climate Future Initiative. According to the Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance and Economy, the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework, ACRF, adopted in 2020 at the 37th ASEAN Summit, emphasized on the importance of sustainable energy and the promotion of green growth to boost the region's economy.

Speaking as Brunei Darussalam's representative at the Meeting between ASEAN Leaders and American Business Leaders at the The Willard InterContinental, Washington DC, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, shared that ASEAN has introduced a few initiatives to align the region's capital markets with the sustainability agenda such as the adoption of the ASEAN Green Bonds Standards and ASEAN Sustainability Bonds Standards as well as the endorsement of the regional taxonomy for sustainable finance.

Yang Berhormat is of the view that there is an opportunity to mobilise private capital to finance the green transition. He explained that ASEAN has been active in promoting a conducive ecosystem to attract sustainable investments and financing. In this regard, U.S. businesses can play an important role and be the enabler in channelling the critical investments, required expertise and technology transfer to ASEAN Member States. The Meeting discussed on issues related to ASEAN-US Post Pandemic Economic Futures particularly on Energy, Climate and Digitalisation.

Working Luncheon

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in a titah says that ASEAN and the U.S. remain committed to peaceful engagement, including through dialogue and consultations within the various ASEAN-led mechanisms to ensure continued regional peace, stability and prosperity.

His Majesty made the titah at a Working Luncheon hosted by Her Excellency Kamala D. Harris, Vice President of the United States of America that took place at the Department of State, Washington D.C. In the titah, His Majesty highlights that ASEAN has established the ASEAN SHIELD to ensure a collective, rapid and effective response to multi-dimensional emergencies and disasters in the future, and encouraged relevant U.S. agencies such as the Federal Management Agency and the U.S. Center for Disease and Control Prevention to add value to ASEAN's efforts to build a more resilient region.

The Monarch in titah also recalls the East Asia Summit Leaders' Statement on Mental Health Cooperation, which the U.S. co-sponsored in 2021. In this regard, His Majesty hopes that ASEAN and the U.S. can advance cooperation in mental health. In addition, maritime security cooperation in the region also remains vital for ensuring the safety of sea lanes of communication. His Majesty underlines that Brunei Darussalam continues to work closely with regional partners in promoting maritime security through dialogue and cooperation, through the hosting of the ninth Expanded ASEAN Maritime Forum last year, which focused on international law and marine environmental protection; as well as the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus, in which the ASEAN Direct Communications Infrastructure between military officials was expanded to include external partners such as the U.S. His Majesty's arrival at the Department of State was greeted by Ambassador Rufus Gifford, Chief of Protocol for the United States. His Majesty then proceeded to the Benjamin Franklin Room to attend the luncheon. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

The Working Luncheon began with welcoming remarks delivered by the Vice President of the United States of America, highlighted that the U.S. remains committed to deepening its relationship with ASEAN and its Member States, and noted the vital strategic importance of the region towards prosperity and security of Americans.
