Manila – Irene Khan, the United Nations Special Rapporteur (UNSR) on freedom of opinion and expression, is scheduled for an official visit to the Philippines from January 23 to February 2.
According to Philippines News Agency, during her visit, Khan aims to evaluate the state of rights concerning freedom of opinion and expression in the Philippines through a process grounded in cooperation and dialogue. This evaluation will include discussions with various stakeholders, including civil society groups, human rights organizations, media entities, experts, academics, and individuals. They are invited to share insights on the country's legal framework related to freedom of expression, media freedom, internet freedom, and other relevant issues.
Khan, who began her term on August 1, 2020, is noted for being the first woman to hold this position since the mandate's establishment in 1993. Her career has been marked by significant contributions to human rights, gender equality, and social justice. A native of Bangladesh, Khan completed her education at Manchester University and Harvard Law School. Her extensive career with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees spanned 21 years, including significant roles such as Chief of Mission in India and Deputy Director in the Division of International Protection.
Her efforts in the field of human rights have been recognized globally, exemplified by her receipt of the Sydney Peace Prize in 2006.
