Puerto Princesa – The city's Subaraw Biodiversity Festival, an annual event celebrating the renowned Underground River, has been nominated for the Outstanding Festival Category in the Philippine LEAF Awards, boosting the local tourism sector.
According to Philippines News Agency, the nomination is expected to enhance Puerto Princesa's standing as a global eco-tourism destination. The Subaraw Festival, celebrated every November 11 since 2011, marks the inclusion of the Puerto Princesa Underground River in the New 7 Wonders of Nature list. The mayor shared the news of the festival's nomination with reporters on Monday, highlighting its affiliation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and noting the strong competition it faces within the awards.
The Philippine LEAF Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in live entertainment, arts, fashion, and festivals, will select one winner from each of the three geographical regions of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Subaraw, representing Luzon, is up against 10 other finalists in its category.
Bayron remarked that the COVID-19 pandemic led to the temporary suspension of the Subaraw Festival, significantly impacting the city's tourism revenue. However, he expressed optimism about the festival's revival and its potential to reaffirm Puerto Princesa's status as a leading tourist destination in the country.
This year's Philippine LEAF Awards are themed 'Tertulia at Parangal 2024' (Gathering and Honors), celebrating the rich tapestry of Filipino cultural and artistic achievements.
