MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has earmarked PHP6.037 billion for the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) to enhance the nation's fishery infrastructure, signaling a substantial investment in the fisheries sector.
According to Philippines News Agency, the allocated funds are designated for the construction and refurbishment of fish ports across the Philippines, aiming to bolster the efficiency and competitiveness of the country's fisheries infrastructure. Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman emphasized that the investment would provide critical support to the fishing community, ensuring that fishermen have access to improved facilities and services necessary for their livelihood.
The World Bank identifies the fisheries sector as a vital component of the Philippine economy, contributing 1.3 percent to the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) and employing approximately 1.6 million people, which includes those in low-income, subsistence fishing communities.
A significant portion of the released funds, PHP1.1 billion, is allocated for the enhancement of fish ports and related post-harvest facilities, highlighting the government's commitment to supporting the fisheries sector's infrastructure needs. The approval of the Special Allotment Release Order by Secretary Pangandaman on February 28 marks a critical step in this developmental initiative.
The PFDA oversees the operation of nine regional fish ports, including those in strategic locations such as Navotas, Iloilo, and General Santos, and is involved in the joint management of the Tacloban fish port in Leyte. This new funding is expected to significantly contribute to the modernization and maintenance of these facilities, thereby supporting the fishermen's livelihoods and the broader community development.
