Philippine National Police to Support Commuters During Transport Groups’ Unity Walk
MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced comprehensive security measures and support for commuters in anticipation of potential disruptions during Monday’s ‘unity walk’ by transport groups advocating for the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP).
According to Philippines News Agency, the PNP, along with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), will provide vehicles to assist commuters affected by the event. Fajardo explained in a radio interview that police would be actively patrolling and ready to help stranded commuters by transporting them to the nearest possible destinations.
The PNP has been in talks with the transport groups involved in the unity walk, affirming their right to express their grievances while urging peaceful and orderly conduct. Fajardo emphasized the importance of non-interference with drivers who choose not to participate in the walk and opt to continue their usual routes to support their families.
Additional measures include the establishment of checkpoints by Sunday night to ensure that the protest remains orderly and peaceful. Fajardo noted that participants are expected from several regions, including Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and potentially Bicol.
The unity walk has garnered the support of various transport cooperatives and leaders within the sector, including Pasang Masda president Roberto Martin. Martin has voiced opposition to a Senate resolution proposing a suspension of the PTMP, stressing the considerable adherence to the program by a significant portion of the transport community.
