PARIS - The Olympic Games returned to Paris after a century, with an innovative opening ceremony held on the River Seine, despite the rain. French President Emmanuel Macron officially opened the Games, which were marked by a momentous lighting of the cauldron by Teddy Riner and Marie-Jose Perec.
According to Philippines News Agency, the ceremony exemplified significant reforms aiming to make the Games more inclusive and sustainable. "You are bringing our Olympic Agenda reforms to life by making these Games wide open. All of us will experience Olympic Games that are more inclusive, more urban, younger, and more sustainable - the first Olympic Games with full gender parity on the field of play," Bach stated during the event. This year's ceremony was notably unique as it was the first in Olympic history not held in the host city's main Olympic stadium.
Athletes from around the world participated in the parade, traveling a 6-km stretch from the Austerlitz Bridge to the Trocadero on 85 boats. Despite adverse weather conditions, the parade showcased Paris's iconic landmarks such as the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. The event was attended by international dignitaries, including Han Zheng, Vice President of China and special representative of President Xi Jinping.
The 2024 Paris Olympics, marking the city’s third time hosting, commenced amid security concerns due to arson attacks on French railways earlier in the day. These incidents caused significant disruptions across European rail services but did not overshadow the festive atmosphere of the opening. Crowds filled the banks and bridges of the Seine to witness the ceremony.
China has sent a large delegation to the Games, consisting of 405 athletes, including 42 Olympic champions, competing in 236 events across 30 sports. This strong presence underscores the international scope and competitive spirit that defines the Olympic Games.
