CATARMAN, Northern Samar — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has provided essential aid to 374 households in Northern Samar, following their displacement due to recent armed conflicts between government forces and insurgents. These families, residing in isolated communities, received vital supplies to sustain them through the period of upheaval.
According to Philippines News Agency, the affected families were given family food packs (FFPs) on Sunday, responding promptly to their needs in the aftermath of the violent skirmishes that occurred on March 19. These clashes, involving government troops and rebel forces, unfolded near the boundaries of Osmeña in Palapag town and Magsaysay in Mapanas town, causing significant distress and temporary displacement for local residents.
In light of the hostilities, local residents were advised by the 74th Infantry Battalion to halt their usual farming and livelihood activities near the conflict zones to ensure their safety. The FFPs distributed by DSWD aim to mitigate the impact of this loss of livelihood by providing essential food items including rice, canned goods, and beverages.
The DSWD's initiative forms part of a broader effort to support those affected by the conflict, ensuring that immediate needs are met while exploring further assistance measures in collaboration with local authorities. The March 19 encounters also had significant tactical outcomes, resulting in casualties among the rebel ranks and the recovery of arms by government forces.
The ongoing communication between DSWD and local government units emphasizes a commitment to address the consequences of the conflict, aiding the recovery of those who have been forcibly uprooted or otherwise affected by the recent hostilities in Northern Samar.
