Post: Ju-Jitsu Fighter Napolis Secures PH’s First Gold in World Combat Games

The Philippines celebrated its inaugural gold medal at the 2023 World Combat Games with ju-jitsu fighter Kaila Jenna Napolis emerging victorious at the King Saud University Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

According to a new release by the Philippines News Agency, Napolis, a 25-year-old athlete, triumphed in the women's -52kg Ne-Waza category, securing a 2-0 victory over Anael Pannetier of France in the final.

Reflecting on her achievement, Napolis expressed her excitement, saying, "It's my first time to qualify in such an event. It feels surreal to be able to get a gold medal especially here in the World Combat Games."

She went on to detail her experience in the final match, noting that her opponent's stance and size were intimidating. However, she maintained her focus and determination to win.

Napolis's journey to gold included a quarterfinal victory over Adriana Cruz of Colombia with a score of 6-0 and a semifinal win against Mongljin Ganbaatar of Mongolia via submission.

The newly crowned gold medalist expressed her gratitude to her national coach, John Baylon, for his support throughout the tournament. She emphasized the importance of his guidance and assistance in her journey.

Coach Baylon, himself a nine-time judo gold medalist in the SEA Games and a former Olympian, praised Napolis for her hard work and preparation, stating, "Kaila deserved the gold medal, she trained hard and came here prepared."

With Napolis's gold medal, the Philippines now has a total of seven medals in the 2023 World Combat Games, including two silvers and two bronzes in wushu, as well as two bronzes in wrestling.

Team Philippines Chef de Mission Alvin Aguilar expressed pride in the team's achievements, noting that this is the country's first gold in the World Combat Games since their debut in 2010. He added that the team is committed to bringing more honor to the Philippines.

The World Combat Games features a total of 1,657 athletes from 80 countries, making it the first time the tournament is held in the Middle East.
