Denmark Prepares Underground Bunkers for 3.6 Million People Amid Global Uncertainties
COPENHAGEN — Denmark has readied underground shelters capable of housing approximately 3.6 million individuals, around 61% of the national population, to provide refuge in the event of war or disasters, according to a report by Jyllands-Posten on Thursday.
According to Philippines News Agency, this strategic expansion, which has been ongoing for the past two years, includes public shelters and annexes integrated within private residences, such as additional rooms beneath garages. This initiative was intensified following the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, reflecting growing concerns over regional stability.
While the Danish Foreign Ministry recently assured that there is no immediate military threat to Denmark, it stressed the importance of preparedness in light of potential nuclear emissions from conflict regions like Ukraine. The Ministry highlighted that, in such events, going indoors is advised as the shelters would not offer additional protection against radiation. Responsibilities for maintaining readiness of these shelters are divided, with municipalities overseeing public shelters and private building owners handling safe rooms under municipal guidance.
