Post: Cebu City Sting Operation Nets Over PHP2 Million in Illegal Drugs

CEBU CITY - In a coordinated sting operation, authorities in Cebu City apprehended two individuals suspected of drug trafficking, seizing over PHP2 million worth of suspected shabu. The operation took place in the city's upland village of Malubog, bringing to light the ongoing battle against illegal narcotics in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, the arrests occurred Tuesday night and involved the collaboration of PDEA agents, naval soldiers, and operatives from Cebu City police station 4. The suspects, identified as Ronald Gabunada, 40, and his nephew, Jestoni Rom, 32, both residents of Barangay Taptap, were caught with 49 packs of suspected shabu weighing approximately 300 grams. The street value of the confiscated drugs is estimated at PHP2.04 million.

PDEA-7 spokesperson Leia Alcantara disclosed that the suspects were also found in possession of a mobile phone and a motorcycle, which they were using at the time of their apprehension. The operation was initiated following a tip from a confidential informant, who reported Gabunada's alleged drug distribution activities in the mountain barangays of Cebu City. Gabunada reportedly had the capacity to distribute around half a kilo of shabu per week, prompting PDEA-7 to conduct a case build-up and place him under surveillance.

Jestoni Rom, who was previously arrested in April 2020 for a similar drug-related charge and was out on bail, is now facing renewed legal challenges alongside Gabunada. The duo is currently facing drug charges in court, highlighting the persistent efforts of law enforcement agencies to curb the drug trade in the Philippines.
