Brunei Darussalam’s Initiatives Highlighted at 19th AMMTC in Melaka
Melaka: Brunei Darussalam’s proactive measures in combating transnational crimes, including Trafficking in Persons, People Smuggling, Cybercrime, and Online Scams, were prominently shared by the Deputy Minister for Security and Law at the Prime Minister’s Office during the 19th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime and Related Meetings (AMMTC). Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Sufian bin Haji Sabtu, who led Brunei’s delegation, emphasized the rising trend of cybercrime, particularly online scams, and the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence by cyber criminals.
According to Radio Television Brunei, the AMMTC and Related Meetings serve as an essential annual platform for ASEAN Ministers responsible for transnational crime issues. The forum provides an opportunity to discuss current trends in criminal activities and the regional security landscape, as well as to exchange views on strategic measures and best practices for addressing the complex challenges of transnational crimes. The event was preceded by Preparatory SOMTC meetings.
Consultations with ASEAN Dialogue Partners were also part of the agenda. During these consultations, the Deputy Minister reiterated Brunei Darussalam’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with ASEAN Dialogue Partners to safeguard peace and stability within ASEAN and beyond. The meeting concluded with the adoption and endorsement of 13 key documents. The 19th AMMTC and Related Meetings were attended by Ministers, Heads of Delegations, and Senior Officials from ASEAN Member States, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, and ASEAN Dialogue Partners, as well as His Excellency Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary General of ASEAN.
