Post: Brunei Darussalam’s Commitment to Women’s Advancement Highlighted on International Women’s Day

Bandar seri begawan: The progress achieved by women in Brunei Darussalam today reflects the country's continued investment in education, human capital development, and equal opportunities.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the Gender Statistics 2024 of Brunei Darussalam reveal that women comprise 47.2 percent of the total population and demonstrate high educational attainment, with a literacy rate of 96.1 percent among those aged 10 and above. In a message for International Women's Day, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports emphasized the strong participation of women in education, from secondary to tertiary levels, which continues to fortify the nation's future workforce and leadership channel.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi Mohamad also noted the increasing participation of women in the labor market, as evidenced by the rise in the workforce participation rate for women aged 18 and above, from 57.3 percent in 2023 to 57.8 percent in 2024. In the education sector, women form the majority of the teaching staff, particularly at the pre and primary levels, highlighting their significant role in nurturing and shaping the next generation. This achievement, according to Yang Berhormat, directly contributes to the aspirations of Wawasan Brunei 2035, aiming to make Brunei Darussalam a country recognized for its highly educated and skilled people, a high quality of life, and a dynamic and sustainable economy. The continued advancement of women in education, the workforce, and community leadership is pivotal in strengthening the country's human capital and supporting its long-term development.

Brunei Darussalam is also strengthening its policy and institutional responses to support the development and protection of women. In July 2025, two National Consultations on the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on the Elimination of Violence Against Women were held. Furthermore, in November 2025, the government, through the Prime Minister's Office, launched the Guidebook on Addressing Workplace Harassment in the Public Service in Brunei Darussalam. These efforts, Yang Berhormat stated, reflect the country's ongoing commitment to strengthening protection mechanisms and advancing the well-being and empowerment of women. Civil society organizations also play a crucial role in complementing national efforts through prevention initiatives and support services for victims.

International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8th, is an opportunity to recognize the vital role and celebrate the contributions and achievements of women and girls worldwide. This year's theme, "Protect, Enable and Empower: Advancing Women in Society," underscores the national commitment to safeguarding the rights, safety, and well-being of women and girls while expanding opportunities for education, skills development, and lifelong learning to enhance their future-readiness. The theme also emphasizes the importance of creating an environment that supports women's leadership, participation, and meaningful contributions in decision-making processes across various sectors of society.
