ISTANBUL — A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck Japan’s southwestern Miyazaki province on Thursday, prompting local authorities to issue a tsunami alert. The earthquake, which was initially reported as a magnitude 6.9 by the US Geological Survey (USGS), was later revised to 7.1. The tremor occurred at approximately 0742 GMT.
According to Philippines News Agency, the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the southwestern part of the country, affecting Miyazaki province. In response, a tsunami advisory was issued for several nearby provinces, including Kochi, Miyazaki, Ehime, Oita, and Kagoshima.
The situation is being closely monitored by local authorities as they assess the potential impact of the earthquake and the tsunami risk to coastal areas.
