Colonial Era Architecture

The Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja was initially the old Royal Customs and Excise building. Built in the 1950’s, the building was among the Colonial architectures left which previously housed the Royal Customs and Excise Department. It is one of the oldest departments established in the country.

The two storey U-shaped building is among the famous architecture in Southeast Asia at the time. It only has a flat concrete roof with an archway in the middle of the main building for vehicles to enter and exit. The archway separates the main building into two sections, the left and right wings. However, the two wings were demolished while the original building remains until today.

After the building was gazetted in 2006 under the Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act, the building was made into an Art Gallery and became a part of the Waterfront and His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam Dirgahayu 60 Monument Complex. On the 1st of December 2019, the building was handed over to the Public Works Department as the project executor for building upgrading works to make it into an oil and gas interactive museum named Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja.
