Western Visayas Sees Significant Decrease in Fireworks-Related Injuries

Iloilo City, Western Visayas – The Department of Health Region 6 (DOH-6) has reported a marked decline in fireworks-related injuries during the Christmas and New Year celebrations in Western Visayas this year, with a 66 percent decrease compared to the previous year.

According to the Philippine News Agency, a total of 68 fireworks-related injuries were recorded from December 21 to 31 across hospitals and health facilities in Region 6. This figure represents a significant reduction from the 202 cases documented in the same period last year. The team attributed this improvement to the successful implementation of the ‘Iwas Paputok Campaign.’

The highest number of cases was reported in Iloilo Province and Negros Occidental, with each logging 25 incidents. Other areas with reported injuries included Capiz with five cases; Aklan, Antique, and Bacolod City with four each; and Guimaras with one case. Notably, Iloilo City reported no fireworks-related injuries.

Of the total cases, 62 individuals were treated and sent home, four were admitted to hospitals, and two were referred to other healthcare facilities. The injuries predominantly involved blast or burn injuries, with 37 people affected. Additionally, two cases involved similar injuries with amputation. Eye injuries were also reported in 28 cases, and one individual suffered from both blast or burns and eye injuries.

The data showed that the majority of the cases involved males aged between one and 20 years, with most injuries occurring while using ‘boga’ or homemade cannons, which are prohibited.

This year’s significant reduction in fireworks-related injuries in Western Visayas indicates a positive impact of the region’s safety campaigns and efforts to discourage the use of dangerous fireworks during festive celebrations.
