RIYADH — The Philippines, already celebrating notable successes at the Paris Olympics, has further cause for national pride with its young chemists' achievements at the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from July 21 to 30. The team brought home two bronze medals and two honorable mentions, demonstrating their prowess in the international academic arena.
According to Philippines News Agency, the bronze medals were awarded to Gelraycs Jules Fornan from Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Soccsksargen Region, under the coaching of Jomarie Enerio, and Rex Alphonse Reventar from PSHS Main-Quezon City, coached by Mara Milagros Esguerra. Notably, Fornan was also a bronze medalist at last year’s competition in Zurich, Switzerland. The Integrated Chemists of the Philippines-Region 12 lauded Fornan’s achievement on social media, expressing regional pride in his accomplishment.
The team also secured honorable mentions for Ogden Michael Javier from PSHS Main and Jacob Emmanuel Sadorra from PSHS Central Luzon, both recognized for their excellent performances under their respective coaches. The delegation was led by head mentor Dr. Raymond Malabed of De La Salle University and Dr. Ian Ken Dimzon of Ateneo de Manila University, showcasing the top young chemists from among 88 participating nations.
Dr. Renato Solidum Jr., Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, praised the efforts and support of all involved in preparing the team for the Olympiad. "We extend our deepest gratitude to all the organizations, coaches, mentors, families, friends, and individuals who supported the Philippine delegation. Your unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental in their success," Solidum stated, emphasizing the collective effort behind the students' achievements.
