Post: Department of Education Investigates Teacher in Leyte Over Alleged Physical Punishment

Burauen, Leyte – An investigation is underway involving a public school teacher who allegedly administered excessive physical punishment to students in Burauen, Leyte.

According to a news release by the Philippines News Agency, the incident has been immediately validated after it gained attention on social media.

The statement elaborated that upon verification of the facts, the department initiated collaboration with the legal office to conduct a comprehensive investigation. The primary goal of the probe, according to the Department of Education, is to ensure the safety and well-being of students in a conducive learning environment.

The incident gained traction on October 24 when a video showing a male teacher asking his students to squat inside a classroom was circulated on social media. The video appears to depict the teacher wielding a broomstick, allegedly striking the learners. Such acts of physical punishment are prohibited under the Department of Education's child protection policy enacted in 2012.
