Post: DENR Launches Water Management Project to Secure Potable Water for Kalayaan Islanders

Kalayaan, Palawan — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is set to roll out a targeted water management project in the municipality of Kalayaan, aiming to ensure sanitation and constant access to potable water for residents.

According to a news release by Philippines News Agency, spokesperson for the Western Command (Wescom), the initiative comes as DENR acknowledges the challenges posed by the limited space in Pag-asa Island, the largest island in Kalayaan. The conditions make the area susceptible to diseases if an effective water management system is not in place. The project also intends to mitigate risks of pollution, water contamination, and harm to local ecosystems.

The plans were revealed during a recent visit by Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga and her team on October 23. Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga discussed potential water management solutions with local officials, drawing upon successful programs from other regions that could be adapted for Pag-asa Island.

According to Coloma, Loyzaga and Kalayaan Mayor Roberto del Mundo talked about constructing a water filtration system on Pag-asa Island, which is home to the town's populace. Both recognized the critical need for clean drinking water for residents and visitors alike.

Kalayaan consists of seven islands with a total population of 193, as per the 2020 census. Coloma said that during the visit, Loyzaga explored various approaches to improve the existing water systems or introduce new technologies. These solutions aim to ensure a resilient and reliable source of safe drinking water for the entire municipality and for other Philippine-held territories in the West Philippine Sea.

The visit also involved members of the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute (UPMSI), who were there to conduct marine studies not just on Pag-asa Island but also on other Philippine features in the West Philippine Sea.

Mayor del Mundo expressed gratitude for the visit, acknowledging the DENR's commitment to addressing environmental challenges and contributing to the development of the town.
