Cebu Ordinance Boosts Microenterprise Support, Aiming to Double Beneficiaries

CEBU CITY – Cebu’s microentrepreneurs have received a significant boost from a newly passed ordinance, according to Glenn Anthony Soco, representative of Cebu’s sixth district to the Provincial Board. The Sugbo Negosyo Ordinance, approved in its third and final reading by the provincial board on Monday, is set to expand support for micro business ventures, with expectations to double the current beneficiaries from 20,000 to 40,000.

According to Philippines News Agency, the initiative was originally developed during the Covid-19 pandemic to foster business opportunities for locals. Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has since broadened the scope of the program, pledging additional funding to bolster the micro business sector further. The program, now in its third season, has been instrumental in helping 20,789 microentrepreneurs through mentoring and financial support, with a dedicated fund of PHP100 million allocated per season.

Partnerships with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) have enhanced the program’s reach, providing essential mentoring sessions aimed at refining business strategies and extending market reach. The DTI also plays a critical role in the rigorous validation and evaluation of applicants, ensuring that the program’s benefits are well-targeted and effective.
