Cebu Hosts Over 300 International Delegates for UN Tourism Events
CEBU CITY — Over 300 delegates from 30 countries are set to participate in two major events organized by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNTO) in Cebu this week. The events include the inaugural UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism for Asia and the Pacific, and the 36th Joint Commission Meeting of the Commission for East Asia and the Pacific and the Commission for South Asia.
According to Philippines News Agency, Cebu was chosen for its vibrant tourism sector and its capacity to host international gatherings. The first event, the UN Tourism Regional Forum, scheduled for June 26, aims to bring together destinations and international experts to exchange knowledge and best practices, focusing on the transformative power of gastronomy tourism, particularly for the benefit of local communities and the environment.
The second event, the Joint Commission Meeting on June 28, is described as a significant UN assembly, where discussions will include preparations for the World Tourism Day 2024. On Friday, the delegates will focus on the implementation and prioritization of sustainable tourism, adopting themes that emphasize green tourism and education.
The provincial government of Cebu is preparing to showcase the region’s tourism capabilities, emphasizing Cebu’s role as one of the country’s leading tourism destinations. “The provincial government’s media arm indicated that delegates will enjoy tours to local attractions including Camotes Island, Dalaguete, Argao, and the world-renowned Bojo River in Aloguinsan town,” the statement noted.
Additionally, the week will culminate in a gala night and a fashion show, featuring the works of Cebuano designers, further highlighting the cultural and creative prowess of the region.
