British Prime Minister Urges De-Escalation in Middle East Amid Rising Tensions

LONDON – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for de-escalation in the Middle East during a significant conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday, amid escalating regional tensions and complex geopolitical challenges.

According to Philippines News Agency, during the phone call, Starmer emphasized the urgent need for all parties involved to pursue de-escalation and avoid further confrontations that could potentially lead to regional instability. He highlighted the serious risk of miscalculation and stressed the importance of calm and careful consideration during these tumultuous times. Starmer specifically called on Iran to refrain from attacking Israel, asserting that war would benefit no party and emphasizing the need for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The British premier also stressed the importance of focusing on diplomatic negotiations to secure these outcomes and mentioned the critical condition of foreign detainees in Iran, underscoring the necessity of providing them with essential medical care. Furthermore, Starmer and Pezeshkian agreed that constructive dialogue between the UK and Iran would serve both nations’ interests, contingent on Iran ceasing its destabilizing activities and refraining from supporting Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Additionally, a joint statement from the US, the UK, France, Germany, and Italy was issued, calling for de-escalation in the region and voicing support for Israel against potential Iranian retaliations. This statement follows the recent spike in hostilities, including the July 31 assassination of Hamas’ political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and the assassination of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut by Israel. The allegations and vows for retaliation have further intensified the atmosphere, with both Hamas and Iran accusing Israel of involvement in Haniyeh’s killing, while Israel has remained non-committal on its involvement.

The ongoing conflict in the region, especially the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip which has resulted in significant casualties, underscores the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and work towards lasting peace.
