BATANGAS — The Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO) in Batangas is leveraging National Arts Month in February to boost the local economy by promoting the work of Batangueño artists and the province's traditional products.
According to Philippines News Agency, Division Head of Culture and Arts at PTCAO, National Arts Month offers an ideal platform to showcase Batangas' rich cultural heritage and indigenous products. The PTCAO is supporting a series of events throughout the month to honor local artists who have made significant contributions to various fields of art. These events include an award ceremony scheduled for February 27, which will introduce the 'Gawad Kumintang Para sa Sining' awards for local artists. Additionally, the celebration will feature film directing sessions with Gabriel Malvar, a recipient of the Dangal ng Batangan award, and film screenings from Kidlat Tahimik's advocacy works.
Hagos emphasized the importance of the Batangas History Society's "Unang Pandayan" initiative, aimed at researching and sharing knowledge about the province's history. This organized group of historians, writers, and academicians plays a crucial role in strengthening programs that promote local culture and heritage to both residents and visitors.
Furthermore, Hagos highlighted the efforts of the Batangas Culture and Arts Council in expanding its network with local artists, leading to the creation of numerous art groups. These artists frequently participate in provincial government events, reflecting Governor Hermilando Mandanas' support for cultural activities. Ongoing cultural mapping efforts by local government units (LGUs) are also part of the initiative to document and preserve Batangas' cultural assets.
The PTCAO's 'Lokal Eh!' program plays a significant role in showcasing Batangas' products, such as the "barong tagalog," "balisong," "habing-Ibaan," and local delicacies like tamales and suman. Hagos encouraged LGUs to utilize the influx of tourists to aggressively market these traditional products. He noted the success of "pasalubong centers" in Taal, Ibaan, Lobo, and Batangas City in drawing attention to local cottage industries.
