Zamboanga City - The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) have posthumously awarded and recognized the bravery of officers involved in a counter-terrorism operation in Tawi-Tawi province earlier this week.
According to Philippines News Agency, DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. and PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil visited Ciudad Medical de Zamboanga on Thursday to honor Master Sergeants Mohammad Lee Aharul and Alberto Olbis. The officers received the Medalya ng Katapangan (PNP Bravery Medal) and the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (PNP Wounded Personnel Medal), respectively, for their actions during the operation. The officials also extended financial support to the wounded officers and their families.
Following their hospital visit, Abalos and Marbil paid their respects to the late Patrolman Ian Valdez at St. Peter Memorial Chapel in Barangay Divisoria, Zamboanga City. Valdez, who was killed in the operation, was posthumously awarded the Medalya ng Katapangan. The officials conveyed their condolences and provided financial assistance to Valdez’s family.
During the May 28 clash in Barangay Lahay-lahay, Tandulas, Tawi-Tawi, the operation led to the death of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) sub-leader Udon Hasim. Hasim, who was wanted for four counts of frustrated murder and 17 counts of murder, was also reportedly involved in the illegal drug trade.
Secretary Abalos emphasized the valor and commitment of the officers, stating that their courage serves as an inspiration to all members of the PNP. Gen. Marbil reiterated the PNP’s dedication to honoring and supporting the families of their fallen and wounded members.
