Post: World Ocean Day Celebration Promotes Marine Conservation in Brunei

Salambigar: The World Ocean Day is recognized as a global initiative to highlight the critical role of the ocean in sustaining life on Earth. It serves as a call to action for collective efforts to preserve, sustain, and protect marine ecosystems. In Brunei, this significant occasion was marked with a celebration organized by Poni Divers Brunei, in collaboration with the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. The event took place on the morning of June 8th at a shopping centre in Salambigar, aligning with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE 2025) and Brunei Sea Week.

According to Radio Television Brunei, the celebration was graced by the presence of Dayang Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. Distinguished guests included Her Excellency Abel Guterres, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, and Catherine Pochkhanavala-Cleeve, Deputy High Commissioner of the United Kingdom. As an integral part of Brunei Sea Week, the event aimed to foster community involvement in marine conservation efforts while nurturing an appreciation for Brunei’s marine resources.

In addition to the celebrations, attendees were treated to a trailer screening of the documentary “Ocean with David Attenborough,” which explores underwater habitats globally and underscores the ocean’s significance. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of World Ocean Day, advocating for increased awareness and proactive conservation measures to safeguard the world’s oceans.
