GARUT, West Java — A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the Garut District of West Java on Saturday night, according to officials from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The agency confirmed that the earthquake, which occurred at 11:29 p.m. local time, was centered 156 kilometers southwest of Garut District at a depth of 70 kilometers. Despite the significant magnitude, no tsunami warning was issued.
According to Philippines News Agency, the head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, the earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat. "The modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami," he stated on Sunday in Bandung. The earthquake, which was felt in Tasikmalaya, Garut, Sukabumi, and Bandung City, was classified as intermediate type due to tectonic activity involving the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate.
As of late Saturday, there were no reports of damage or casualties. Daryono also noted that there had been no aftershock activity following the initial quake. He urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid structures that might be compromised during seismic events. "Remain calm and not be influenced by unverified information," he added.
