US-Led Noble Caribou Naval Drill Conducted with Five Nations in South China Sea Amid Regional Tensions
SOUTH CHINA SEA – A five-nation joint naval drill led by the United States took place in the South China Sea on Tuesday.
According to a new release by the Philippines News Agency, the exercise, named “Noble Caribou,” aimed to enhance tactical skills and foster cooperation among the navies of the participating countries in the South China Sea. Warships from the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand took part in the drill.
The commanding officer of the Japanese forces, Togawa Hisado, emphasized the value of the multilateral exercise in improving tactical capabilities and strengthening relations with the navies of participating countries. He noted that the exercise demonstrates a collective will and capability to maintain a security environment that does not permit unilateral changes to the status quo through force. “We will engage in our upcoming missions while maintaining a posture to respond swiftly to any contingency,” Hisado stated.
The multi-national naval exercise in the South China Sea comes against a backdrop of escalating tensions between China and the Philippines over overlapping maritime claims.
