March Sets Record as Warmest Month, EU Report Reveals
BRUSSELS — Last month has been officially declared the warmest March on record globally, according to the European Union’s Earth observation program, Copernicus. The average surface air temperature for March soared to 14.14°C (57.45°F), marking a significant increase of 0.73°C above the average for January 1991-2020. This temperature surpassed the previous March record set in 2020 by 0.10°C. Copernicus highlighted the concerning trend of increasing temperatures, with the past 10 months being the hottest on record.
According to Philippines News Agency, Europe experienced its second-warmest March, with the average temperature reaching 2.12°C above the standard March average from 1991-2020. The report pointed out that central and eastern Europe saw notably higher temperatures, reflecting a broader global pattern of rising temperatures in various regions. Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, stressed the urgent need for rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to halt further warming.
