Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has pledged support for the First Scout Ranger Regiment (FSSR) to enhance its operational capability, recognizing its crucial role in the Philippines' national defense and security. The commitment was made during the celebration of the FSSR's founding anniversary at Camp Tecson in San Miguel, Bulacan.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Department of National Defense will review the Scout Rangers' capability requirements and explore options to improve their operational effectiveness. This initiative aims to achieve the defense objectives and transform the armed forces into a stronger, more reliable force, capable of defending the country against both current and emerging threats.
President Marcos emphasized that the commemoration of the FSSR's 73rd anniversary is a testament not only to the unit's rich history but also to its critical role in addressing internal security challenges and protecting the nation. He commended the Scout Rangers for their steadfast defense of the country and their loyalty and professionalism over more than seven decades.
Highlighting the evolution of the unit from jungle to urban warfare, the President acknowledged the importance of their specialized skills in warfare, counterterrorism, and special operations for national security. He urged the Scout Rangers to maintain their commitment to bravery, dedication, excellence, and professionalism in their mission.
The President also expressed his vision for an insurgency-free, secure, and harmonious Philippines, where citizens can pursue their dreams without hindrance. He noted that his recent proclamations granting amnesty to former rebels are a significant step towards national healing and peace-building.
The amnesty program, he stated, is in line with the Scout Rangers' mission and contributes to the country's stability and unity. The initiative aims to provide a path for former rebels to reintegrate into society lawfully.
The FSSR, one of the elite forces of the Philippine Army, specializes in anti-guerrilla warfare and counter-insurgency operations. Established in November 1950, the unit was initially created to counter the Hukbalahap insurgency and other security challenges. Since its inception, the FSSR has played a pivotal role in various military operations, including the Zamboanga Siege in 2013 and the Battle of Marawi in 2017, highlighting its significance in addressing internal security threats in the Philippines.
