PHP 270 Million Flood Control Initiatives Launched in Negros Occidental to Shield Communities

BACOLOD CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL — Communities in Bacolod City and Binalbagan town now have enhanced flood protection thanks to three newly completed flood mitigation projects totaling PHP 269.1 million, funded by the national government. These initiatives aim to significantly reduce flooding risks in these historically flood-prone areas.

According to Philippines News Agency, the projects include a PHP 91-million flood control structure in Barangay Granada, a PHP 79.1-million slope protection project along the Binalbagan River, and a PHP 99-million river control structure along the Binalbagan-Isabela Road. These structures were completed as of Wednesday and are designed to safeguard communities against the impacts of heavy rainfall and typhoons.

In Bacolod, the flood control structure is strategically positioned to protect Puroks 6, 7, and 4 in Hacienda Carmen by preventing overflow from the Loygoy River, which frequently threatens these areas. DPWH-6 Regional Director Sanny Boy Oropel described the structure as a resilient barrier designed to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience within the city.

Meanwhile, in Binalbagan, the two slope protection projects are crucial for the safety and security of residents in Barangay San Jose. The concrete slope protection adjacent to Binalbagan Bridge spans 195.2 lineal meters and is built to withstand the erosive forces of the river. Additionally, the project along Binalbagan-Isabela Road features reinforced concrete with steel sheet piles, further mitigating the risks associated with potential flooding.

Director Oropel emphasized that these projects proactively address natural challenges and ensure a safer environment by reinforcing riverbanks and road slopes, thus securing the communities against the adversities of natural elements.
