Philippines Prepares for Repatriation of Fugitive Former Lawmaker Arnolfo Teves Jr.
MANILA — Justice Secretary Jesus Remulla announced on Wednesday that preparations are underway for the repatriation of Arnolfo Teves Jr., a former lawmaker currently held in Timor-Leste following his arrest earlier this year. The government’s optimism about the return of the fugitive comes amid ongoing legal proceedings regarding his extradition.
According to Philippines News Agency, the capture of Teves was facilitated through collaborative efforts with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). Teves, who was apprehended in March, has been under scrutiny for his alleged involvement in serious criminal activities. “The cooperation with Interpol has been instrumental in addressing cases like that of Congressman Teves, showcasing the critical role of international law enforcement relationships,” Remulla explained during a press briefing.
Teves faces multiple criminal charges in the Philippines, including 10 counts of murder, 12 counts of frustrated murder, and four counts of attempted murder. These charges stem from his alleged involvement in the shootings on March 4, 2023, in Pamplona, Negros Oriental, which resulted in the death of Governor Roel Degamo and several others.
On June 27, the Department of Justice (DOJ) received a favorable ruling from the Court of Appeals of Timor-Leste, granting the Philippines’ request for Teves’ extradition. However, Teves has challenged the decision, filing an appeal that is currently pending resolution.
Remulla highlighted the complexities of international extradition, noting that such processes are contingent upon the dual criminality of acts and the preservation of national sovereignty. The DOJ has prepared a team of law enforcement officers ready to travel to Timor-Leste to escort Teves back to Manila once legal barriers are cleared.
