Post: Philippine Lawmakers Applaud Appointment of New Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel

MANILA — The Philippine House of Representatives expressed approval on Friday following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s decision to designate Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. as the new head of the Department of Agriculture (DA). This move is seen as bringing in private sector dynamism to the country’s critical agriculture and fisheries sectors.

According to Philippines News Agency, Laurel’s comprehensive experience in the private sector is poised to significantly contribute to the growth and innovation in the agriculture and fisheries industries. Romualdez cited the potential benefits of integrating private sector efficiency and innovation with the broader goals of the public sector.

Laurel, who comes from his role as president of the Frabelle Fishing Corporation, brings to the DA a deep understanding of supply chains, market demands, and global industry trends. His dual insight into both corporate management and the public service is expected to influence policies that promote profitability while ensuring the welfare of the agricultural community.

Romualdez also extended gratitude to President Marcos for his service as the outgoing DA Secretary, emphasizing the foundation laid during his tenure for enhancing the livelihoods of farmers and fisherfolk. The Speaker voiced his expectation that Laurel will continue to prioritize the collective interests of this sector.

House Majority Leader Manuel Jose Dalipe remarked on Laurel’s suitability for addressing the agricultural challenges, particularly his understanding of advanced technologies in food preservation and the potential for reducing waste and extending the shelf life of the country’s produce.

House Minority Leader and Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera referred to Laurel’s appointment as a milestone in strengthening and revitalizing the agricultural industry, citing his industry expertise as vital for sustainable growth and innovation in the sector.

AGRI Party-list Rep. Wilbert Lee emphasized Laurel’s role in continuing the government’s focus on addressing longstanding agricultural issues and expressed optimism for the continuation of programs and projects initiated by President Marcos to develop agriculture in the Philippines.

Kabayan Party-list Rep. Ron Salo commended Laurel’s appointment, confident that Laurel’s leadership will result in growth, sustainability, and prosperity within the agriculture and fisheries industry, along with environmentally responsible practices.

Laurel, who leads Frabelle Fishing Corp, has guided the company’s evolution from a modest trawling operation founded by his parents in 1966 to its status as a prominent player in the Asia-Pacific deep-sea fishing industry. The company, which began with two vessels, now boasts a fleet of approximately 150 and was acknowledged as a top supplier for local canned tuna producers as early as 1972.
