P182-M Flood Mitigation Structure Completed in Pangasinan

BALUNGAO, PANGASINAN – A PHP182.6 million flood mitigation structure has been completed in Barangay Kita-Kita, Balungao town, Pangasinan, aimed at protecting residential areas and agricultural lands from flooding. The structure was constructed along the Cabalancian River and spans 826 meters, incorporating advanced engineering features to enhance flood defense.

According to Philippines News Agency, information officer of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Ilocos Region, the structure was funded by this year’s national budget and completed within a few months, starting on February 26 and concluding on June 30. “The project not only safeguards the community but also secures the agricultural activities that are vital to the local economy,” Tinaza stated.

Local officials, including Barangay Kita-Kita chairman Federico Mariano, have expressed hope that similar projects will be implemented in other parts of the village, which often face flooding issues. The region, being a catch basin for runoff from surrounding higher areas, benefits significantly from such infrastructure. “This flood mitigation initiative will significantly enhance our community’s resilience against natural disasters,” Mariano noted during a phone interview.
