LEGAZPI CITY — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Bicol (DENR-5) announced that 5.6 million tree seedlings have been planted across forest areas in the region’s six provinces over the past two years, marking a significant stride in the government's Enhanced National Greening Program under the current Marcos administration.
According to Philippines News Agency, the DENR Regional Director, the initiative has covered 8,771 hectares since 2022, aligning with the department's aim to increase forest cover. During a press event at the DENR regional office, Milla outlined that these efforts were not only about planting trees but also involved bolstering cooperation with law enforcement to combat illegal logging activities.
Milla also highlighted the broader environmental strategy under Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, which emphasizes evidence-informed and science-based methods for achieving resilient and sustainable development. He further detailed the operationalization of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s Executive Order 22, which led to the creation of the Water Resources Management Office. This office facilitates local water permit applications and compliance, aiming to simplify processes for residents and ensure sustainable water management throughout Bicol.
In addition to reforestation, DENR Bicol has been active in biodiversity conservation, managing 19 protected areas. The regional office has implemented several special projects, including the assessment of unused fishponds and the economic evaluation of coral reef damages, to sustain ecosystem services vital for fisheries, coastal protection, and tourism.
