Northern Mindanao Jail Population Approaches 6,000 as BJMP Implements Support Programs
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, NORTHERN MINDANAO — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Northern Mindanao (BJMP-10) announced on Tuesday that the region’s Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) count has reached 5,996, prompting the institution to enhance support and reintegration programs.
According to Philippines News Agency, the BJMP-10 director, the latest figures as of July 18 indicate a rising population in jail facilities. Langawin highlighted during a media briefing that despite the constraints, the BJMP has established several initiatives aimed at improving the lives of PDLs. These initiatives include programs for livelihood and skills training, as well as support for reintegration and employment after release.
One significant challenge contributing to the overcrowded conditions is the delay in the release of some PDLs who have already qualified for discharge due to slow processing of necessary documents. Langawin emphasized the role of BJMP’s paralegal officers in addressing this issue, “We have PDLs staying in jail beyond the maximum penalty due to these delays. Our paralegal officers are actively coordinating with the courts to expedite the release documents of those who have completed their sentences.”
