Negros Occidental Governor Affirms Commitment to Water Security with USAID Partnership




Negros Occidental — Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson affirmed the commitment of Negros Occidental to achieving water security in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Safe Water project, during the 2024 Provincial Water Summit at Ayala Malls Capitol Central.



According to Philippines News Agency, the province has embraced the challenges of ensuring sustainable water security and is determined to continue its efforts with renewed vigor. He made these remarks while unveiling the #WaterSecurePH installation, accompanied by provincial government officials, local chief executives, and representatives from national government agencies and non-government organizations. The event was part of a commitment ceremony that highlighted the province’s dedication to water security.



The summit featured a presentation by USAID Safe Water’s chief of party, Alma Porciuncula, who discussed the ‘Journey to Water Security.’ This presentation outlined the activities undertaken and the challenges faced in securing water sustainability for Negros Occidental. Governor Lacson noted the significant progress made thus far and the extensive work still required to achieve complete water security.



In 2023, Negros Occidental launched the Provincial Integrated Water Security Plan (PIWSP) for 2023 to 2030, developed in cooperation with the USAID Safe Water project team. The PIWSP aims to enhance access to resilient water supplies in water-stressed communities, improve water resource management, and strengthen water sector governance.



Governor Lacson expressed gratitude towards USAID Safe Water for their expertise and support, emphasizing the importance of their continued partnership in benefiting the province’s three million residents.



The summit also included panel discussions on the proposed PHP1.2-billion Negros Bulk Water Supply Project, nature-based solutions, and the Output-Based Aid Blended Finance House Sanitation and Zero Open Defecation Program. This provincial event followed Governor Lacson’s participation in the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, where he discussed the implementation of the Philippine Sector Master Plan through Provincial Integrated Water Security Planning.
