Negros Art Community Seeks Recovery of Stolen Amorsolo Masterpiece

SILAY CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL – The arts community in Negros Occidental is mobilizing efforts to recover a stolen painting by National Artist Fernando Amorsolo, titled “Mango Harvesters,” which was taken from the Hofileña Heritage House and Museum earlier this week. This 12×18 masterpiece, created in 1936, holds significant cultural value and commands a high market price.

According to Philippines News Agency, headed by Tey Sevilleno, an urgent call for public assistance was posted on Facebook. The plea emphasizes community support in protecting local museums and recovering the lost artwork. “Let us all help to find the stolen Amorsolo from the Hofileña Heritage House,” Sevilleno urged in the post, highlighting the need for public vigilance and cooperation.

The theft was first announced by Solomon Lopez-Locsin, chair of the Negros Occidental Historical Council, who issued a “stolen art alert” on social media. Lopez-Locsin appealed to the community to help spread the word to prevent the resale of the stolen piece, describing it as “an important piece of Philippine art.” He provided contact details for the Silay Component City Police Station for anyone with information or sightings of the artwork.

The city government has become actively involved in the case. Rene Hofileña, the museum manager, reported the theft to the city’s tourism officer, which prompted immediate action from local officials. Mayor Joedith Gallego and museum authorities convened to discuss measures for enhancing security at the museum and facilitating the recovery of the painting.

The investigation, led by Lt. Col. Mark Anthony Darroca of the Silay police, is underway, with hopes pinned on leads from museum security footage. The community remains on high alert, with the shared goal of recovering the Amorsolo masterpiece and preventing future incidents.
