National University Secures Semifinal Spot in SSL Volleyball, Set to Face Letran
MANILA — National University (NU) decisively clinched a spot in the semifinals of the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) National Invitationals volleyball tournament, overpowering the University of Southern Philippines Foundation with a straight-set victory on Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
According to Philippines News Agency, NU’s victory was marked by strong performances from opposite Nataszha Bombita and wing spiker Myrtle Escanlar, who both scored nine points. Middle blocker Sheena Toring contributed significantly with seven attacks and three blocks, leading the Lady Bulldogs to their third consecutive win in the series. Notably, wing spiker Mhicaela Belen and Arah Ella Panique each added six points to the tally, with Belen also securing four aces.
Coach Norman Miguel expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance but noted areas for improvement. “We still need to work on our passing and blocking. And also in our connections, especially the chemistry between the rookies and the seniors,” Miguel stated, reflecting on the match that spanned one hour and 18 minutes.
On the opposing side, middle blocker Dya Hanica Mejos was the top scorer for the Cebu-based University of Southern Philippines Foundation, achieving seven points through six attacks and one block. Additional contributions came from wing spiker Checelle Kaye Buñao and opposite Ressel Pedroza.
Looking ahead, NU, which holds titles from both the SSL Collegiate Preseason Championship and the UAAP, will face Colegio de San Juan de Letran in the semifinals. Letran advanced following their victory over the University of Batangas, highlighted by Gia Marcel Maquilang’s performance, which included 12 attacks and three aces. Nizelle Aeriyen Martin and Lea Rizel Tapang also played pivotal roles for Letran, contributing ten and nine points, respectively.
The semifinal lineup will be completed after the upcoming matches between the University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University, as well as between the College of Saint Benilde and Enderun Colleges.
